Unfortunately, 2022 was not a year for predictability, and 2023 is already continuing on a similar trajectory. The war in Ukraine, inflationary pressures and the impact of the Covid outbreak in China on global supply chains are just a few factors creating an uncertain environment. This will continue to have remarkable impact on the industry.

Our latest industry survey has identified the ongoing struggles of warehouses trying to predict demand patterns accurately. Of those surveyed, just 39 per cent of respondents felt they could accurately predict trends and activity for the holiday season. Therefore, it will be critical to develop resilience to counteract what may very well turn out to be a turbulent year ahead. Yet instead of focusing on the external factors organizations can’t control, organisations need to look at their internal operations and focus on what they can control.

Resilience comes from a well-equipped, motivated and safe workforce with transparent and extensive knowledge of their roles and processes. Investing in human-centred technology, and seeking out efficiency gains built around the human worker, can provide the stability warehouses are looking for. The findings in our survey confirm what has been self-evident to those in the warehousing and logistics industry for a few years. External factors are wreaking havoc on the ability of businesses to predict demand and prepare for new challenges. Organisations need to focus on building agile and efficient processes through data-driven insights into the internal workings of the shop floor. Building certainty in the warehouse protects from uncertainty outside of it. A continuous stream of data that provides reliable insights into areas eating away at efficiency and energy is needed. Doing so will create a digital footprint.

Offering up more granular information and creating a targeted approach to inefficiencies and energy consumption. At the end of the day, we expect businesses to increase their workflow intelligence capabilities, build digital supply chains, and rely more on AI and machine learnings to stay ahead of the curve and mitigate the imminent risks. This will come with the establishment of a bottom-up perspective of their shopfloors and the ability to analyze ongoing processes in real time. This will allow organizations to better manage their inventory, recognize pattern, and identify potentials they didn’t even know they had. That said, we expect more and more shopfloor workers to be connected to the Internet of Things as they year progresses.
