Simulation-Driven Design

  • Cloud-based CAE tools will enable more small manufacturers and start-ups to make informed, reliable product design decisions faster. Cloud-based CAE reduces the maintenance and operating costs for smaller users, especially those that require mobility and scalability of their workforce.
  • The definition of what generative design means may vary across the engineering community, but the industry is unanimous as to why it creates such excitement. Techniques that allow the faster design of high performing and lightweight parts using a simulation-driven design approach have gained fast adoption, but what’s next? The next generation of generative design tools will incorporate physics, machine learning, and human creativity from product ideation through to manufacturing.

Automotive Concept Design

  • An increased adoption of data analytics will shape the way early vehicle decisions are made. Applying statistical methods such as dimensionality reduction to the huge number of design variables considered during a vehicle program will enable a subset of critical performance criteria to be identified. The essential measures can then be considered during early studies using advanced physics simulations to identify the most promising design concepts.

Mechatronic Systems Design

  • Engineering simulation and IoT technology are being used together to provide operational insights with physics-driven and data-driven digital twins. Companies are optimizing equipment performance, gaining operational insights and reducing operational costs, by knowing when and where to perform predictive maintenance.

Additive Manufacturing

    • Additive manufacturing (AM) will move to primetime as it is making the move from capability to capacity. No longer purely associated with rapid prototyping, advanced engineering teams are now using AM as a viable, timely and cost-effective production solution to produce lightweight parts or to create timely tooling for manufacturing and assembly. Across industries we’re seeing organizations utilize solutions to optimize their design for additive manufacturing (DfAM) with early manufacturing analysis, including applying machine learning to production decisions, and to simulate material characteristics. It’s the integration of these robust and accessible simulation design tools combined with AM that will lead to more efficient manufacturing methods.
    • Additionally, complex materials/structures such as layered composite are becoming more mainstream, which increases the need for advanced design synthesis and analysis tools to get truly optimized parts.

Cloud Computing

  • Simulation takes to new heights in the cloud. Organizations that can leverage high-performance computing (HPC) to run through more designs in less time will have an advantage in beating competitors to market. Manufacturers in industries like automotive and aerospace increasingly rely on HPC for shorter time to solution, faster time to market, and superior product quality, and those that can access HPC dynamically through technology like cloud bursting can meet these demanding goals quickly, without the upfront cost and complexity of building out HPC infrastructure.
