MBD Training Is Critical

February 7th, 2018 by Jennifer Herron

In 2017 International TechneGroup/ITI asked over 200 customers from various industries about their Model-Based Enterprise (MBE) practices. The big story here is that 18% are struggling to understand MBE, and 16% identified culture change as their MBE challenge. To me this implies that over 30% of the challenge to MBD (Model-Based Definition) and MBE (Model-Based Enterprise) can be solved with effective training and education.

Action Engineering and the PLM Center of Excellence at Purdue University have entered into an agreement to advance Model-Based Definition (MBD) and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) education for industry. In particular, Action Engineering will serve as an industry professional partner with Purdue University’s MBD and PLM Certificate Programs. Through this partnership, both organizations can more effectively foster the MBD and PLM education needs of industry professionals.

Model-Based Definition is an industry practice that uses 3D CAD models with annotations to communicate information between people and equipment, instead of traditional 2D drawings. MBD reduces variability during data translation, provides more accurate product definition information, and enables wider dissemination of product data through increasingly digital corporate enterprises.

There is a critical need for organizations to fill a gap in their MBD and PLM methods and practice. Purdue University and Action Engineering together hope to leverage years of MBD and PLM education experience to make companies more effective in their market segments.

“We are really excited to work with Professors Nathan Hartman and Rosemary Astheimer at Purdue to bring a deeper understanding of the aspects necessary for successfully implementing and practicing Model-Based Definition – People, Processes, Standards, and Tools,” said Jennifer Herron, CEO of Action Engineering. “Today we see that companies have a basic understanding (Literacy) of MBD, but they often lack a Practitioner (Competency) and Mastery level aligned with available tools and standards. We think this collaboration will help our clients close the gap between literacy and mastery education in MBD.”

The ability to evolve and tailor instruction for a variety of learners across the product lifecycle is a critical aspect of any educational program. Each job role has unique needs when authoring and consuming digital product data within day-to-day operations. Nathan Hartman, the Dauch Family Professor of Advanced Manufacturing and Director of the PLM Center, promotes such a model when building educational programs with industry, and the partnership with Action Engineering directly supports that effort.

“The PLM Center at Purdue University is pleased to partner with Action Engineering in the development of MBD and PLM education programs for industry,” Hartman said. “Action Engineering’s domain expertise and accessible technical content, paired with the experience and educational expertise within the PLM Center, provide an effective option for companies looking to provide appropriate levels of education on PLM and MBD topics.”

ABOUT THE PURDUE PLM CENTER OF EXCELLENCE

The Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) Center in the Polytechnic Institute at Purdue University is an interdisciplinary research center at Purdue University. The center fuses the talents and resources of experts from the Purdue Polytechnic Institute, the colleges of Engineering and Science and Krannert School of Management into a single focused entity that serves as an industry resource. Through research, training and implementation of product lifecycle management tools and methods, the Center provides its partners in business and industry with knowledge and tools to improve their bottom line.

The PLM and MBD education programs include sharing of current industry technology and best practices, providing students with credentials that can help advance their professional careers. The MBD/PLM Courses focus on the capabilities of current CAD technologies, employing best practices. While not advocating specific CAD tools in these courses, real-world challenges will be highlighted to prepare students for what may be encountered along their model-based journeys. These programs combine innovative learning methods, real-world experiences, and industry partnerships. The goal is to return people that complete the programs back into the workforce, more uniquely qualified to transition into technology-driven careers.
