Vanguard Video Demonstrates H.265/HEVC Technology Running on Xilinx FPGA Hardware

LAS VEGAS — (BUSINESS WIRE) — April 8, 2013 — At NAB 2013 today, Vanguard Video (booth SU12007) showcased a hardware implementation of their H.265/HEVC technology running on a Xilinx KintexTM-7 FPGA. The Xilinx FPGA provides acceleration for portions of the H.265 encoder and this hardware integrates with Vanguard Video’s comprehensive software implementation of the H.265 standard. This combination allows OEMs to create powerful, cost effective H.265 real-time solutions.

“It is very difficult to encode H.265 in real-time because it is extremely resource intensive. A real-time software implementation today requires Intel Xeon or similar high end x86 processors,” says Irena Terterov, CEO, Vanguard Video. “By offloading processing of various H.265 components onto a Xilinx FPGA we are able to achieve higher performance with lower cost x86 CPUs. We are very excited to have this H.265 technology as part of the Xilinx Smarter Vision initiative.”

“Real-time video processing is a key requirement in broadcast applications and as the world moves to 4K2K video and the ability for any device with a screen to receive streaming video, particularly smart phones and tablets, advanced H.265 technology is critical to the broadcasters success,” says Ben Runyan, Director of Broadcast and Consumer Segment Marketing at Xilinx. “We are excited to have Vanguard Video bringing their advanced real-time H.265 technology onto Xilinx All Programmable FPGAs to help our customers to stay a generation ahead in broadcast video.”

The NAB demonstration features a Xilinx KC705 board with a Kintex-7 FPGA mounted on an Intel based PC running V.265, Vanguard Video’s H.265/HEVC compliant software codec SDK. V.265 includes patented algorithms, multithreading technologies, and special drivers that efficiently integrate the FPGA H.265 components into the V.265 software encoder.

H.265/HEVC, ratified as International Standard in January 2013, will be the dominant video compression technology deployed for the next decade. H.265 promises to deliver up to 50% reduction in bandwidth and improved video quality compared to that of the existing H.264 standard.
