SGI® Altix® UV Scales Microsoft Windows Server to Its Maximum

Altix UV Now Four Times the Scale of HP, 2.6 Times the Scale of IBM

FREMONT, Calif. — (BUSINESS WIRE) — March 25, 2011SGI (NASDAQ: SGI), a trusted leader in technical computing, today announced that customers can now deploy standard Windows Server® 2008 R2 and Windows-based applications to the maximum scale possible of 256 physical cores and 2 terabytes of memory. Customers can now scale their Microsoft technologies up to 260 percent further with SGI.

SGI Altix UV, leveraging standard Intel® Xeon® processors with out-of-the-box Microsoft-certified Windows Server, Microsoft-based applications and Microsoft SQL Server, with data warehousing and data mining tools built with Business Intelligence Development Studio, is immediately available. Running Windows Server, Altix UV now offers four times the scale of HP’s best Windows Server platform and 2.6 times the scale of IBM’s best Windows Server platform. Customers are no longer constrained by IBM or HP to scale their mission-critical data or compute-intensive workloads.

“Our technology relationship with Microsoft and Intel is showing results,” said SGI CEO Mark J. Barrenechea. “We continue our joint development work with Microsoft and Intel, and look forward to scaling these mission critical technologies even further.”

Certified running standard Windows Server 2008 R2, Altix UV 1000 with 256 cores of Intel® Xeon® processor 7500 series and 2 TB of memory has four times the x86 scalability of HP and 2.6 times the scalability of IBM. A detailed performance table is listed below from www.windowsservercatalog.com:

Vendor   Platform   Architecture   Physical Cores
SGI   UV 1000   Intel x86   256
IBM*   X3950 M2   Intel x86   96
HP**   Proliant DL980 G7   Intel x86   64

“SGI and Intel are changing the dynamics of mission critical computing,” said Pauline Nist, general manager of Mission Critical Computing at Intel. “By combining the power of the Intel Xeon processor with SGI’s high-performance Altix UV system, large scale-up x86 computing is now a reality for IT looking for alternatives from the costly and proprietary RISC/mainframe architectures.”

With Windows Server 2008 R2 availability on Altix UV, the world’s fastest and most scalable shared-memory computer, the entire catalog of Windows applications, including Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2, with data warehousing and data mining tools built with Business Intelligence Development Studio, is now supported. This solution allows users to expand enterprise, analytics and simulation capabilities with the addressability of its large memory. As a result, larger quantities of data can be analyzed and more real-time business decisions made possible.
