Frost & Sullivan Recognizes Innovative Split Cycle Engine for Automotive Usage

PALO ALTO, Calif.—(BUSINESS WIRE)—August 27, 2007— Based on its recent analysis of engine technologies, Frost & Sullivan is proud to present Scuderi Group LLC with the 2007 Frost & Sullivan North American Technology Innovation Award in the field of engine technologies.

This Award recognizes the innovative Scuderi split cycle engine, which uses a large number of conventional parts, but with a different design, has the potential to achieve better performance than conventional engines.

While engine technology has improved over the years, the basic design is still the same as a hundred years ago. What has changed is the engineering that goes into the modern engine and the advances in metallurgical sciences that have contributed to engines running longer without maintenance.

The Scuderi split cycle engine keeps the conventional four-stroke cycle and the components that make up a normal engine with some modifications. Its design splits the cycle into two physically distinct areas, which each handle two strokes of the four-stroke cycle. The use of conventional components would considerably lower the entry cost for manufacturers hoping to gain from this new design.

"The split-cycle design of the Scuderi engine provides greater design flexibility than a conventional engine," notes Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Sivam Sabesan. "For example, supercharging the power cylinder can be accomplished internally simply by increasing the diameter of the compression cylinder. The split cycle design is also supposed to improve fuel efficiency by 15 to 30 percent and reduce nitrous oxides (NOx) emissions by 50 to 80 percent."

Moreover, the existing concept has been further extended to air hybrid technology. The revision takes advantage of the fact that the cycle is split to store energy as compressed air.

Adding a small storage tank to hold compressed air and valves to control the flow would enable the split cycle engine to temporarily store energy that would be otherwise lost during braking. It might be possible to recover energy from the exhaust cycle with the whole design being applicable for both gasoline and diesel engines.

"Being honored with such a prestigious award from such a world-renowned growth consulting company is very clear validation that the Scuderi Air-Hybrid Engine is poised to positively change the automotive world," said Sal Scuderi, president of the Scuderi Group. "We are committed to bringing this technology to market so that the world's auto makers can deliver the most fuel-efficient, environmentally-friendly internal combustion engine being developed today."

The Scuderi Group has already been granted over ten patents by the patent offices in the United States, Taiwan, China, and South Korea. The company also has an extensive patent portfolio with a number of patents pending in 45 countries. It invests extensively in research pertaining to the split cycle engine and is aggressively building up its patent portfolio.

"The company has employed a judicious mixture of good engineering with manufacturability, an issue that has been the bane of most unconventional designs in the last century," says Sabesan. "The focus on platform technology, something that can be used with all internal combustion engines, also points to a clear focus by the company on addressing the problems at a very broad level."

Recognizing the Scuderi Group's platform design and its potential to change the face of engine technology, Frost & Sullivan is pleased to award the Scuderi Group the 2007 Technology Innovation Award in the field of engine technologies.

Each year Frost & Sullivan presents this Award to a company that has carried out new research, which has resulted in innovations that have brought, or are expected to bring significant contributions to the industry in terms of adoption, change, and competitive posture. This award recognizes the quality and depth of a company's research and development program as well as the vision and risk-taking that enabled it to undertake such an endeavor.

Frost & Sullivan Best Practices Awards recognize companies in a variety of regional and global markets for demonstrating outstanding achievement and superior performance in areas such as leadership, technological innovation, customer service, and strategic product development. Industry analysts compare market participants and measure performance through in-depth interviews, analysis, and extensive secondary research in order to identify best practices in the industry.
