The New England states of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont account for 26,155 manufacturing companies employing 916,659 workers, reports MNI's yearly survey.
"This unique region gained plants because its workers rank high in the skills, education and technology that make up America's new advanced manufacturing," said Howard Dubin, Chairman of the Chicago area-based publishing company which has been conducting surveys of US industry since 1912.
Massachusetts remains the region's top industrial state, claiming 38% of New England manufacturing plants while supporting 45.4% of the area's industrial employment, according to statistics compiled by Manufacturers' News. Connecticut ranks second with 6,203 plants or 24% of New England manufacturing and 26.6% manufacturing employment, while New Hampshire ranks third with 3,146 plants and 99,327 jobs.
Maine ranks fourth with 2,645 plants and supports 78,758 of the region's industrial jobs while Rhode Island ranks as a close fifth with 2,416 plants and 78,673 jobs.
Providence, Rhode Island is New England's top industrial city, housing 407 plants or 17% of Rhode Island manufacturers. Boston and Worcester (MA) rank second and third with 300 and 255 plants, respectively.
Manchester, New Hampshire, ranks fourth with 249 plants while fifth-ranked Warwick, Rhode Island reports 229 manufacturers.
MNI data indicates plant losses were most severe in Rhode Island, which lost 34 plants over 1 year and 71 plants over five years. Vermont lost 2 plants in 2005, but gained 265 plants over 5 years. New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Maine, and Connecticut gained a total of 200 plants over 1 year and 1,700 plants over 5 years.
According to the Registers' breakdown of industrial sectors, industrial machinery and equipment is Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire's largest industry, accounting for a total 3,488 plants or 13% of New England manufacturers. Maine's top industrial category is lumber and wood at 432 plants, while Rhode Island's major sector is metal fabricating at 327 manufacturers. Vermont's main industry is printing and publishing with 259 manufacturing companies.
