PTC And IHS Partner For Comprehensive Environmental Regulatory Compliance Solution

NEEDHAM, Mass.—(BUSINESS WIRE)—Jan. 18, 2006— PTC (Nasdaq: PMTC), the Product Development Company(TM) announced a partnership with IHS, Inc (NYSE: IHS) to deliver electronic components content to users of PTC Windchill(R). Windchill is a content and process management solution that helps companies optimize their product development process.

Electronics companies today face a difficult challenge to comply with new environmental regulations from the European Union (RoHS and WEEE), as well as emerging regulations from across the globe. The partnership between PTC and IHS will provide the foundation by which a comprehensive environmental regulatory compliance management solution will be offered to address these challenges. This solution provides tools that help companies to manage component compliance data, determine the compliance of a product structure or BOM against a selected regulation (e.g., RoHS), and manage the change process to bring a non-compliant product structure into compliance.

According to Eric Karofsky, senior research analyst, AMR Research, "some of the OEMs' biggest problems with collecting content are as follows:

-- Difficulty finding and verifying data for thousands of parts from suppliers across the world

-- Component information changes rapidly, hindering the validity of static content

-- Compliance data not readily accessible to multiple groups, such as engineering, design, and procurement

-- Reporting in multiple languages and formats that are acceptable to each legislating body."

"Companies in the electronics supply chain ultimately need real-time content that is integrated with a robust Product Data Management (PDM) system," adds Karofsky.

As a result of the recent acquisition of the i2 Content and Data Services business, the IHS Parts Solution now includes the Parts Universe solutions, containing a comprehensive and complete electronic components reference database. Additionally, IHS's content services can source, produce, deliver and maintain environmental compliance content / data per each customer's individual needs. IHS also has an existing partnership with Underwriters Laboratories Inc.'s (UL) Restricted Substance Compliance Solutions (RSCS) services. The program leverages UL's extensive worldwide resources to help manufacturers address the challenges of compliance with thorough testing of homogenous products, database access to RSCS data and surveillance.

"Client's have been requesting integration of component information with PLM Solutions. With over 500,000 users, PTC is a tremendous opportunity to provide content and data services that will ultimately enable better overall design decisions," said Peter Lachapelle, solution vice president, IHS. "Access to this critical information and verification will ensure that PTC clients have one of the highest levels of formal due diligence and significantly improve the confidence of compliance for over 33,000 clients."

"Customers struggle with identifying and correcting component selection problems during design," said Chad Hawkinson, director of electronics and high tech marketing and strategy, PTC. "By bringing IHS Content and Data Services to Windchill users, we're providing designers with the tools to make better decisions at the beginning of the design process enabling companies to better meet product cost targets, launch dates and support goals, while ultimately being compliant with the various regulations."
