MatrixOne Cited as Collaborative Product Commerce Leader

Highly Respected Analyst Firm Places MatrixOne in Primary Position in its Enterprise Leaders Quadrant

WESTFORD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 14, 2002--In its annual Magic Quadrant evaluation of the Collaborative Product Commerce (CPC) sector, Gartner, Inc., a leading research and advisory firm, listed MatrixOne, Inc. (NASDAQ: MONE - news) a leader in ability to execute in the CPC industry. The Magic Quadrant, a copyrighted study by Gartner, competitively ranks vendors by considering customer feedback, software architecture, breadth and quality of supported functions, software development directions and track record, product pricing and packaging, implementation support, and business viability.

Gartner's "Collaborative Product Commerce Magic Quadrant for 4Q01" evaluates and positions 20 vendors in the fast-growing CPC market. Based on Gartner's analysis, MatrixOne is the highest ranked vendor in ability to execute CPC solutions in the Enterprise Leaders section of the quadrant. Gartner cited a number of factors for MatrixOne's positioning, including demonstrated ability to realize a CPC vision through software, positive customer feedback and strong financial performance throughout 2001. Gartner also reported that MatrixOne customers are pleased with the company's eMatrix software for ease of implementation, flexible data modeling, Web support and strong initiatives toward interoperability with heterogeneous engineering data.

The report places the major CPC vendors into one of four quadrants - Enterprise Leader, Challenger, Visionary, or Niche Player. It affirms Gartner's belief that opportunities to collaborate within individual value chain activities are increasing. Enterprise Leaders were selected based on customer feedback, profit, total revenue, revenue growth, strength of management team, marketing capabilities, breadth of industries served, depth of penetration in those industries, cash flow, and balance sheet.

MatrixOne has been a pioneer in the field of product collaboration, and has over 575 customers using its solutions. Its extensive client base is particularly strong in the automotive and high-tech sectors, including such leaders as GE, Honda, JDS Uniphase, Nokia, Siemens, and Covisint.

"Some of the world's most innovative companies have helped us develop our vision as the leading provider of product collaboration solutions for the value chain. Our ability to execute against that vision is enabling us to work with companies worldwide to improve their financial performance by changing the way they bring products to market," said Mark O'Connell, president and chief executive officer of MatrixOne.

The Magic Quadrant is copyrighted December 2001 by Gartner, Inc. and is reused with permission. Gartner's permission to print its Magic Quadrant should not be deemed to be an endorsement of any company or product depicted in the quadrant. The Magic Quadrant is Gartner's opinion and is an analytical representation of a marketplace at and for a specific time period. It measures vendors against Gartner-defined criteria for a marketplace. The positioning of vendors within a Magic Quadrant is based on the complex interplay of many factors. Gartner does not advise enterprises to select only those firms in the Leaders segment. In some situations, firms in the Visionary, Challenger, or Niche Player segments may be the right match for an enterprise's requirements. Well-informed vendor selection decisions should rely on more than a Magic Quadrant. Gartner research is intended to be one of many information sources and the reader should not rely solely on the Magic Quadrant for decision-making.
