I think the article about mid-range versus high-end is probably accurate from a "market" point of view (i.e. "the little guys are catching up"). However, it is often more important to view future trends from a technology point of view (although I realize that MBA's make all decisions about CAD/CAM/CAE instead of actual engineers any more).
In this case, I would rather see (for the global market) what software is being used at OEM's (the large enterprises that make technologically signficant products) versus what software is at suppliers. I think that even if there are 10 times more seats at supplier-type companies than OEM's, it is still the OEM's that drive the overall system design, production, and field support, and thus they drive the CAD/CAM/CAE market. I guess I believe there are really 2 markets - Enterpise CAD/CAM/CAE and Supply Chain CAD/CAM/CAE (and naturally I am at an OEM and I am prejudiced toward the point of view that Enterprise is more important...).
I see the biggest difference in these markets as follows:
Enterprise CAD/CAM/CAE has data management "front and center" (even for analysis).
Enterprise CAD/CAM/CAE handles legacy data of many types (2-D, 3-D of all stripes and colors), as well as "jt/Vis/VRML" type of technology for merging multi-CAD models.
Enterprise CAD/CAM/CAE must be working toward full 3-D production simulations (perhaps why Siemens bought UGS/SDRC) as well as 3-D in field operations.
I don't see Solid Works, Solid Edge, Inventor tackling these problems soon (since they are probably not marketing to OEM's in Aero, Astro, Auto, Shipbuilding, etc.). Also, thinking about the market "my way" means the large CAD companies do not have to worry about losing sales to "sister" products. They are really 2 different markets. AND, it is best to keep an eye on the Enterprise products; this is where the future trends really are (and I think there are still many new cool things to be developed in these software systems - at least if the MBA's and outsourcerers do not totally strangle our creativity).
