MIE Solutions released version 10.2 of its production control software for the manufacturing industry. MIE Trak 10.2 covers over 150 new enhancements and changes to the 10.1 released product. Features include quick purchase order creation from requirements, automatic work order creation from MRP reporting, improved nesting data collection to improve job costing and many of the screens are now resizable to fit larger monitors to improve productivity. Quick order entry has been added to the sales order module to enable quick entry of sales orders. A new exploded bill of material which includes labor summary is a great new tool to see a large assembly and its materials and labor
requirements. New reports include a work in process and profitability report that explodes assembly work orders into individual components for an accurate view of cost. Lean manufacturing is well-suited for MIE Trak because it allows manufacturing cells to be efficiently handled, tracked, and costs accumulated.



FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) and PTC announced that PTC has agreed to a three-year sponsorship of the
FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) program.

As the CAD and Collaboration sponsor, PTC will provide its Pro/ENGINEER, Mathcad, Windchill, and ProductView CAD and collaboration software to all FTC teams at no cost. This software will allow teams to build their robots in a virtual environment using models of parts supplied in the FTC Competition Kit. The sponsorship also includes a named design award, recognizing teams that use innovative design approaches in their solution. The PTC Design Award recognizes design elements of the FTC robot that are both functional and aesthetic.

http://www.ptc.com/go/first/ . FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) is a challenging mid-level robotics competition designed for high-school-aged students who want a hands-on learning experience to develop and hone their skills and abilities in science, technology, engineering, and math.



ZWSOFT announced ZWCAD 2009 Beta, the newest in its line of DWG-compatible CAD products. As a productive drawing solution, ZWCAD 2009 Beta makes improvements in such functions as Hatch, Refedit, Insert, Pasteclip, Explode, Trim, and Extend. Improvements made to the DRX application programming interface allow users to create custom objects that can be inserted, pasted from the Clipboard, stretched, extended, trimmed, and exploded. New features in the beta of ZWCAD 2009 include the Tool palettes, eTransmit command, Aerial View Window, Editing with Multiple Grips, and dimensioning of Jogged Dimension and Arc Length Dimension. Improvements requested by users include:
  • More efficient
    collaboration and drawing management, ZWCAD 2009 adds Tool Palettes, eTransmit, Aerial View Window, Multiple Grips Editing, Filter, etc.
  • Compatibility with dimensions, ZWCAD 2009 adds Jogged Dimension and Arc Length Dimension.
  • General drafting efficiency, ZWCAD 2009 improves association to the hatch, tracking to entity snaps, Refedit to the editing of external reference files, and unlimited undoes to the Undo/Redo mechanism.

Dubai Victory Team is using SolidWorks and SolidWorks Simulation design validation software to develop high-speed powerboats that will sustain the team’s reign as world champions. Fresh off of its 2008 Class 1 World Powerboat Championship win, the team is now preparing for the rigorous 2009 season by using SolidWorks to improve hydro- and aerodynamics. Dubai Victory Team hopes the newly redesigned boats will continue to rocket at 160 miles per hour or more to new championships and speed records. The Class 1 World Powerboat Championship features international teams competing in a series of races held around the world. One driver and one throttle person operate each boat. Each boat is 42 feet long, with twin 900 horsepower engines powered by propellers with five blades. Victory standardized on SolidWorks to transition from 2D drawings to 3D modeling to wring more performance from the boats. Engineers redesigned the propeller in SolidWorks, using lighter and stronger material to deliver better weight/performance ratio. SolidWorks’ surfacing helps Victory Team engineer gaps out of the boat’s hull, deck and cockpit designs, ensuring the boat is completely water tight – especially after integrating vendors’ designs. Victory Team uses SolidWorks Simulation software to study how different parts of the boat’s assembly will stand up to the rigors of powerboat racing.
SolidWorks Motion enables the team to conduct torque and acceleration analysis of one of its gear boxes. In the future, Victory engineers will use SolidWorks to more accurately calculate the boat’s center of gravity to create more options for reducing weight (via material thickness analyses) and delivering more power.
