The rover, about the size of a Hummer and boasting a pressurized cabin and observation bubble, can accommodate a pair of astronauts as they study extraterrestrial surfaces. Before humans reach Mars, similar rovers could serve on near-earth asteroids.
When you're tasked with extending human reach farther into space, stock parts and traditional manufacturing methods won't fly. About 70 parts on the rover are 3D-printed, including flame-retardant vents, pod doors and many custom fixtures. One ear-shaped exterior housing is deep and contorted, and would be nearly impossible to build without 3D printing.
