UGS Honored With PLM Award

UGS Corp. announced that Frost & Sullivan, a global growth consulting company, will present UGS with the 2006 Product Lifecycle Management Solutions Company of the Year Award during the annual Frost & Sullivan Best Practices Awards Banquet in Orlando, Fla.

The Company of the Year Award is presented each year to the solutions company that has demonstrated excellence in all operations. The award is based on numerous factors including the company's business development, competitive strategy and leadership within a particular Frost & Sullivan Industry Research Group. The award recipient also must demonstrate superior market growth skills through significant gains in the market and must take advantage of market changes through the execution of innovative strategies within the existing competitive landscape.

"It is a great honor for UGS to receive such a prestigious award," said Tony Affuso, chairman, CEO and president of UGS. "One of the primary challenges for our customers is to drive the process of innovation along with globalization. UGS has successfully helped its customers overcome this challenge through its innovative collaborative product data management (cPDM) solution and because the solution is powered by the JT visualization technology, customers are able to share knowledge and information across the organization and throughout the supply chain."

In order to select the Company of the Year Award recipient, Frost & Sullivan analysts quantify several market factors for each market participant according to predetermined criteria, paying close attention to their combined operations efforts. This process includes interviews with all the market participants, customers and suppliers, along with extensive secondary and technology research. The companies' efforts are then analyzed based on the number of new customers, new segments and commitment to business expansion coupled with market growth. Industry participants are then ranked based on the predetermined measurement criteria.

"We congratulate UGS on this enormous achievement in the PLM industry," said Sath Rao, Research Manager for Frost & Sullivan. "UGS exhibited outstanding management, consistent growth, and positive social and economic impact on local and national communities and customers. The company's exceptional customer service has been noted as a critical success factor, coupled with the ability to combine technology and successful strategic initiatives."

The recipient of the Company of the Year Award has excelled based on one or more of the following criteria: Although there aren't a lot of specifics about exactly which PLM solutions UGS is receiving this award for, I'll assume it applies for both NX and the Velocity Series. The award seems to be oriented more toward corporate strategy, philosophy, and marketing than straight technology, but technology does seem to have at least some bearing on consideration for and receiving the award. Since we've covered NX quite a bit in the recent past, let's take a quick look at the UGS Velocity Series and why it would be considered worthy of the Frost & Sullivan award.

The UGS Velocity Series is a modular family of products that are intended to bring PLM to small- and medium-sized (what UGS calls mid-market). It's a pre-configured family of software for digital product design, analysis and data management, so it can be implemented pretty much out of the box, and includes: Together, these products offer some pretty substantial PLM capabilities at a relatively low total cost. Depending on specific needs, the products can also be purchased individually and run standalone. Another nice feature of the Velocity Series is that its data is bi-directionally associative with its big brother, NX, and is scalable to the full range of UGS' enterprise-level PLM portfolio. Sort of "room to grow" as needs dictate.

Although I'm sure there were other points of consideration, in my book, the Velocity Series' capability, scalability, and affordability for smaller organizations are what have earned UGS the PLM award from Frost & Sullivan. Since the UGS Velocity Series was first announced, I'd been impressed with the company's comprehensive approach and its commitment to the mid-market. After all, based on the sheer number of potential mid-market customers, it makes a lot more sense. While selling any technical/engineering software is a challenge, selling 10 seats each to 1,000 customers is a heck of a lot easier than selling 1,000 seats each to 10 customers. Large enterprises are cool, but the mid-market rules, at least in terms of current potential.

The CAD Society, a not-for-profit CAD industry association, announced the winner of the 2006 CAD Society Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr. Russell F. Henke was selected to receive this year's award for his life-long dedication to the CAD industry as a top-level engineer, educator, corporate executive, consultant and respected industry analyst. Dr. Henke is currently president of Henke Associates, business/management consultants to over three-dozen high-technology client companies worldwide for the last ten years. Henke Associates is based in the San Francisco Bay Area. During the previous 25 years -- while serving as corporate officer, board member or entrepreneur -- he was active in developing, marketing, selling and supporting commercially-successful applications software & global professional services in electronic design automation (EDA); finite element analysis and Mechanical CAD/CAM, as well as in industrial and electronics manufacturing.

CAD Society Announces the Winner of the 2006 Leadership Award Leadership Award
The CAD Society, a not-for-profit CAD industry association, announced the winner of the 2006 CAD Society Leadership Award. The recipient of this year's award is Dana K. "Deke" Smith. Mr. Smith has demonstrated outstanding leadership in the spatial information and CAD industry from the very beginning of his career and will receive the award for his exemplary leadership of the effort for a National Building Information Modeling (BIM) Standard. Deke Smith is an architect by education, training and temperament. Throughout his career, he has applied an architect's problem-solving skills-and tolerance for ambiguity and conflicting requirements-to solving a broad range of technical and business-process challenges in the building design and construction industry.

CAD Society Announces Winner of the 2006 Joe Greco Community Award
The CAD Society, a not-for-profit CAD industry association, announced the winner of the 2006 Joe Greco Community Award. The recipient of this year's award is Chris Yessios, PhD, co-founder, President and CEO of AutoDesSys Inc. The CAD Society's Joe Greco Community Award (previously The CAD Society Award for Community) is awarded each year to one individual who has distinguished themselves by improving communication and developing community within the CAD industry. It has been renamed in memory of industry analyst and editor, Joe Greco, who passed away two years ago. Chris Yessios holds a PhD in Computer Aided Design from Carnegie-Mellon University and his formal education includes a BArch and a Diploma in Law, both from the Aristotelian University in Greece. He taught and researched at The Ohio State University from 1973 to 1995, where he was a Professor of Computer Aided Design and Director of the Graduate Program in Computer Aided Architectural Design. During his tenure he wrote and published more than 100 research papers and book chapters and conducted research that resulted in a number of prototypical CAD and 3D modeling systems. His list of sponsors includes IBM, DEC, and the National Science Foundation. He is now Professor Emeritus, The Ohio State University. In 1990, with David Kropp, a former student of his, he founded AutoDesSys, Inc., a company that produces 3D modeling software. He has been the CEO and President of the company since its start.

Agile Software To Incorporate SymphonyRPM Business Analytics Capabilities
SymphonyRPM, Inc., provider of an integrated enterprise platform for performance management and predictive business analytics solutions, announced that it has been selected by Agile Software Corp., a provider of PLM products, for a technology partnership that will deliver new decision-centric, analytics-based PLM offerings to market. Through this partnership, Agile will leverage the SymphonyRPM platform to build scenario-based analytics capabilities into its enterprise PLM offerings. Agile customers will benefit from increased visibility into the drivers of product excellence across revenue, cost, quality, compliance, and innovation. Customers will also benefit from being able to improve and automate decision-making throughout the product lifecycle and the extended enterprise.

Maserati and PTC Renew Partnership
PTC announced that Maserati Corse, the racing department of the Italian car manufacturer Maserati, has renewed its commitment to deploy the PTC Product Development System for another three years. The agreement qualifies PTC as a Technical Partner and Official Supplier enabling Maserati to effectively manage the whole product lifecycle of its racing cars with PTC solutions. Maserati Corse and PTC have been partnering since 2003, when Maserati decided to rejoin the racing circuit. The PTC Product Development System, a combination of Pro/ENGINEER, Windchill ProjectLink, and Windchill PDMLink supports the Maserati engineering team in creating great racing cars derived from street cars, while effectively collaborating and controlling the digital product structure throughout the lifecycle of the vehicles.
