Multifunction machining with TopSolid'Cam

Multifunction machines (often called mill turn machines) are capable of combining milling and turning operations and can thereby machine complex parts in just 1 operation. It is important to realise, however, that these machines require not only specialized and highly trained staff but also a CAD/CAM software adapted to mill turn machining which enables the simulation and synchronisation of different machining stages when the machining program is generated on the computer.

The purchase of sophisticated machining centres is a very important investment and represents a big challenge for these companies: Modern machining centres and mill turn machines are very expensive and in many cases need to work 24h a day so that the investment is profitable. One of the main reasons why companies stop direct programming on the machine is the complexity of multi-axes machining using 2 spindles which makes mental calculation of different operations impossible.

The right CAD/CAM software is therefore essential to get the most out of your mill turn machine. One of the key competencies of a CAD/CAM software for complete machining is its capacity to manage milling and turning. The majority of software solutions on the market today offer very strong milling strategies but are less competent in turning. Missler Software in fact developed very strong competencies in turning from early on and today is one of the leading providers of CAD/CAM solutions for turning. Many TopSolid customers choose TopSolid'Cam because of its strong turning capacities.

In TopSolid'Cam turning operations the part is placed on a virtual machine and the software proposes adapted machining cycles. In addition, TopSolid'Cam indicates which operations can and cannot be carried out with the selected machine. This differentiates TopSolid'Cam from other software solutions which do not have integrated simulation capacities. “TopSolid'Cam does not simulate a machine like in some software solutions, it programs a virtual machine which thereby enables the operator to verify and control the toolpath during programming." Another strong point of the software is the possibility to manage the stock so that all machining operations take into account the correct stock model.

TopSolid'Progress to design and manufacture your tools

TopSolid'Progress is a CAD solution for the design of progressive tools for sheet metal forming. Since 2004 Missler Software has worked closely with AutoForm Engineering, specialist in the die face design and sheet metal forming process simulation software notably for the automobile industry, to create unfolding techniques which are directly accessible in TopSolid. The first stage of this collaboration was completed with the creation of the module BlankWizard in January 2005. The second stage happened with the launch of TopSolid'Progress 2006 and the creation of the new module FormingWizard. Let's take a closer look at TopSolid'Progress, BlankWizard and FormingWizard.

BlankWizard, a module available with TopSolid'Progress since the beginning of 2005, integrates AutoForm Engineering's forming simulation technology to enable the die designer to rapidly define the required blank and design the strip in a completely associative process. BlankWizard is also available for purchase directly with the module TopSolid'Design. Companies working with TopSolid'Design will use BlankWizard to obtain the cutting contours of parts which cannot be folded/unstamped using « classical » methods. This module is also very useful for calculating the surface of the part and thereby calculating the amount of material needed at the estimate stage, in particular for parts created by stamping or progress tool processes.

Companies already using TopSolid'Progress can use BlankWizard in many different ways. Its functionalities are directly integrated in the blank creation which is carried out when the part is imported. Many possibilities are open to the operator who can carry out a global unstamping operation or use a method that combines unfolding and unstamping (for some isolated areas of the part).

The collaboration between Missler Software and AutoForm Engineering continues to evolve and earlier this year Missler Software launched FormingWizard, a more advanced follow-on from BlankWizard. This new add-on has been created for companies that need more precise information on the process of unfolding that will be carried out on the part:

  • Firstly FormingWizard gives access to a database of standard materials to calculate more precisely the dimensions of the unfolded part. The operator can add his own materials to the database by indicating the mechanical characteristics of the material.
  • Secondly, FormingWizard offers analytical tools which can detect, both globally and locally, the variation of the thickness levels and deformation undergone by the part. The operator, thereby, obtains precious information to analyse the feasibility of the part deformation.

This month let's take a look at a new tip for TopSolid'Design and how to find files.

Video commentary

All TopSolid users want be able to retrieve their files easily within TopSolid. TopSolid'Finder* is the tool which enables you to do this.

How to retrieve your files: Inside TopSolid click on "Search" followed by the filtre icon. This function allows you to determine your search criteria. In this example search in the ..\encaisseuse folder for all parts made of steel.

Note: we can search in all folders. All we have to do is to drag and drop the desired folders in the target list. Now click on the search button to see the result. The information tag allows us to affine the search by selecting a critera - in this example the criteria is steel (search of all steel parts)

We can then save the results and criteria of the search. By double clicking on the file in the list we can open the file in TopSolid or TopSolid'Viewer.

*TopSolid'Finder is an independent and free module which can be downloaded and installed from the internet.
