SolidWorks Software Used For New Refrigerator and Freezer Design

Danish Manufacturer Standardizes on SolidWorks to Accelerate Design Time, Reduce Production Errors, and Augment Collaboration

CONCORD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 6, 2003-- One of Europe's largest refrigerator and freezer manufacturers is using SolidWorks(R) 3D mechanical design software to accelerate new product design for some of the 800,000 units it ships around the world annually. The Vestfrost Company has standardized on SolidWorks to reduce design time and production errors so it can speed new, innovative products to market.

Based in Esbjerg, Vestfrost is Denmark's largest and Europe's fourth largest manufacturer of household and commercial refrigerators, freezers, and coolers. It has established a worldwide reputation for high quality and environmentally friendly products, as well as constantly developing designs to meet customer and market demands. It designs custom products for some of the largest manufacturers in the industry and has also developed strong markets for its own Vestfrost brand products. Vestfrost purchased 18 licenses of SolidWorks to unify two separate research and development divisions on one 3D design software package to reduce the time to complete and troubleshoot creative product designs.

"Our biggest challenge has been to meet our customers' product design, performance, and delivery demands. They're always changing," said Jan Hou Larsen, an engineer at Vestfrost's research and development department. "When we merged research and development departments, we evaluated different 3D modeling packages, including Inventor. But SolidWorks gave our engineers more creative freedom when designing our parts. It has made engineers' jobs easier, so they can finish designs faster than with 2D products."

Vestfrost relies on design firm Smedegaard & Weis to design forms for all the interiors of the Vestfrost products, including the egg trays and vegetable bins. Smedegaard & Weis engineers often draft designs in SolidWorks and send them to Vestfrost, where engineers finalize the designs prior to manufacturing. With both firms using SolidWorks, design collaboration is seamless, fast, and virtually error-free.

"Designing competitive refrigeration products that meet consumer whims and rigid commercial deadlines and specifications is a feat in itself," said Tobias Andersson, SolidWorks manager for the Nordic Region. "Vestfrost has also become one of Europe's largest manufacturers. SolidWorks will help it maintain a market advantage by delivering more new products faster and with fewer errors than 2D."

Vestfrost works with SolidWorks reseller TEAMWORKS for ongoing implementation, support, and training.
