Engineers at New York's Leading Companies Choose SolidWorks 3D Mechanical Design and Analysis Software

SolidWorks becoming the state's standard for ease of use, accuracy, and design speed

CONCORD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 26, 2003-- SolidWorks Corporation today announced its 3D mechanical design and analysis software is becoming the de facto standard in New York State, home to some of the world's most prominent companies, including SolidWorks customers BorgWarner Automotive, Corning Inc., Eastman Kodak, Enidine Inc., Fisher Price, IMC, Lockheed Martin, and Everest VIT Inc.

Intuitive and powerful, SolidWorks(R) 3D mechanical design software offers solid modeling to thousands of New York design engineers seeking software that is affordable, easy to use, and easy to learn. More than 3,000 designers and engineers at more than 700 companies and more than 70 educational institutions use SolidWorks software. In addition, more than 80 New York companies have deployed SolidWorks COSMOS(TM) analysis products to test designs before prototyping and production. SolidWorks has a particularly strong customer base in New York's consulting, plastics, and mold/tool/die markets.

Everest VIT Inc., the leader in remote visual inspection equipment, uses 28 licenses of SolidWorks software to design and improve all of its products. Its VideoProbe(R) video borescopes, for example, are tiny cameras at the end of small insertion tubes as long as 100 feet that explore machinery and components within industrial sites for problems, a chip or crack in a turbine blade within an airplane's jet engine, or defects in pipes and valves in a nuclear power plant. The operator views the results on a video display screen on the VideoProbe handheld controller LCD screen. For large-diameter pipe, tank, and vessel inspection, the company's RECON(TM) Digital Inspection System(TM) - a portable system with a 6.4-inch VGA LCD monitor, interchangeable camera heads, a range of cable and length options - is used by professionals in the power and process industries.

"We standardized on SolidWorks as our 3D modeling software for many reasons, including its wide market adoption, short learning curve, affordability, and embedded analysis tool, COSMOSXpress," said Josh Scott, one of Everest VIT's lead designers, based in Skaneateles Falls, N.Y. "With SolidWorks, we've managed to shave a week off what used to be our 10-day cycle for obtaining quotes from our suppliers. Instead of sending suppliers a collection of 2D drawings that they have to stitch together to gain an overall picture of what we want, we just e-mail them an interactive eDrawings image of the model. They open it up and immediately understand what we want. So we're designing products more quickly, getting supplier quotes faster, and moving products to market in record time. This is good for business."

Several large 3D mechanical design software resellers, including Axis Technologies and CADimensions, Inc. have emerged in New York because of the growing demand for companies like Everest VIT to develop new products quickly. "Facing intense competition at home and abroad, New York designers need a 3D mechanical design platform they can use to reduce design time, analyze structural integrity, manage computer-aided design (CAD) data, and collaborate with partners," said Pete DiLaura, president of CADimensions. "SolidWorks and COSMOS are making big inroads here because they're the most reliable, affordable, and easy-to-use mechanical design products available. New York designers are competing effectively, in part because they're bringing more new designs to market more quickly at a lower cost with SolidWorks."

SolidWorks has shipped more than 268,000 seats of its software worldwide, feeding a growing demand for products that reduce the cost and complexity of innovation. "SolidWorks is the emerging standard for 3D mechanical design in New York because it makes engineers' jobs easier," said Mike Crismond, vice president of North American sales at SolidWorks. "Our mission is to provide engineers with mechanical design software that meets customers' increasingly pressing needs for faster time to production with fewer mistakes. The growth in New York in a variety of industry segments demonstrates our commitment to that mission."

The three-product COSMOS family of 3D analytical and engineering simulation applications reduces testing costs, improves quality, and speeds time to market by analyzing the operation and physical behavior of designs before prototyping. The three applications - COSMOSWorks(TM), COSMOSMotion(TM), and COSMOSFloWorks(TM) - are fully integrated with SolidWorks.
