Governor Granholm Proclaims 'Michigan Manufacturing Week' Sept. 7-13, Alongside SME Event

DEARBORN, Mich., Aug. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Earlier this week, Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm signed a proclamation declaring "Michigan Manufacturing Week" September 7 - 13 to coincide with the Society of Manufacturing Engineers' (SME's) Midwest Machine Tool Show at the Novi Expo Center.

David Hollister, director, Michigan Department of Consumer and Industry Services, will present the Governor's official proclamation to SME officials at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 9, kicking off the show that runs through Sept. 11. The Governor referred to Hollister as Michigan's "manufacturing jobs czar" in a speech earlier this month at the Management Briefing Seminars in Traverse City

SME's three-day Midwest Machine Tool Show is expected to attract more than 4,000 manufacturing professionals to discuss and experiment with the latest machine tool technologies and equipment on display by hundreds of exhibitors. The SME event, the largest of its kind in the Midwest, has a long tradition of providing buying and selling opportunities, conferences, and forums for manufacturing professionals in Southeast Michigan, as well as the entire Midwest.

SME programs, and the 65-year heritage of this manufacturing event, support the commitment Granholm has expressed to the survival and growth of manufacturing.

Said 2003 SME President David G. Lee, "The future of manufacturing rests on the collaborative efforts of industry, government, academia, and economic development leaders. SME supports the governor's vision through our workforce development initiatives to protect, build and secure the future of manufacturing - the greatest contributor to economic wealth."

With 5,000 members in the State of Michigan, and tens of thousands more around the nation, SME invests in the education and skills enhancement of manufacturing professionals of all ages. In addition to regional manufacturing shows, forums, conferences, publications, and other information resources and engagement opportunities that help the current workforce stay on top of technologies, the Society has invested $1.2 million in Michigan youth programs, grants, and scholarships. This includes youth programs for K-12 students, grants to help colleges and universities improve their manufacturing engineering programs, and scholarships to help talented local students pursue academic degrees and careers in manufacturing.

For instance, this year, SME celebrates the 10th Anniversary of its Student Summit held alongside the Midwest Machine Tool Show where students from local high schools can tour exhibits, meet manufacturing leaders, and gain knowledge of the latest advances in tools, equipment, and technology. More than 1,800 Michigan students have learned about the real world of manufacturing through these summits.

Dozens of other students have attended SME's Science Technology and Engineering Preview (STEPS) camps, which launched in Michigan last year at the University of Detroit Mercy (UDM), with funding from Ford Motor Company. Then-Governor-candidate Jennifer Granholm helped kick off that event and addressed the aspiring manufacturing professionals. Similar camps were held this year at Grand Valley State, with funding from the Nokomis Foundation, and again at UDM, with Ford Motor and Visteon funding.

The Midwest Machine Tool Show includes several educational sessions geared particularly toward the needs of the small to mid-sized manufacturing companies -- the backbone of the state's economy. Highlights include:

* Tools, Dies, & Molds Industry Summit: A Look into the Future of Michigan's Tools, Dies and Molds Industry, Sept. 9, 9 a.m. - noon.
