Move Consistent With Company's PLM Industry Leadership and Unique 'PLM Open' Strategy
Performance and scalability
EDS' Unigraphics NX 2, announced in May 2003, is the PLM industry's most advanced CAD/CAM/CAE software. After working closely with Intel and HP, EDS' PLM Solutions line of business will add the HP Workstation zx2000 and zx6000, running Microsoft's Windows XP 64-Bit Edition Version 2003 operating system, to its list of platforms already supported by Unigraphics NX 2.
"The rapid evolution of computing power in our industry has enabled us to significantly expand the scalability of our software solutions," said Chuck Grindstaff, president, PLM Products, EDS PLM Solutions. "Our NX portfolio takes full advantage of these new open platform architectures, and the combination of the two addresses the diverse needs of our customers -- including extensive scalability that allows our customers to virtually showcase an entire product in the computer. These high-performance solutions provide our customers much greater volume and productivity capacity, and will enable them to benefit from elevated levels of price-performance."
Open Solutions, Strong Relationships
Establishing itself as the first in the PLM industry to support Itanium 2-based workstations is not only consistent with EDS' position as a leading supplier of PLM solutions, but also supports the company's "PLM Open" strategy. This strategy distinguishes EDS in the PLM industry through its focus on the delivery of an open PLM platform in conjunction with the building of key relationships with leading companies in a variety of industries. EDS' collaboration with Intel, HP and Microsoft contributed to EDS' ability to be first-to-market with a leading PLM application like NX on the Itanium 2-based workstation.
"HP continues to partner with leading ISVs (independent software vendors) such as EDS PLM Solutions to optimize application performance on our Itanium 2-based systems," said Jim Zafarana, vice-president of worldwide marketing for HP's workstation business unit. "HP is pleased to be the first to ship EDS' NX portfolio on Itanium 2-based workstations with Windows XP 64-bit and thereby offer customers a more robust solution for enterprise product development."
EDS clients in all industries should benefit from the open environment and the higher levels of computing and versatility afforded by the new Itanium 2-based workstations. Combined with EDS' NX portfolio of performance driven software, the new solution should significantly improve efficiency in product development. This combination is particularly key to manufacturers, such as automotive, aerospace and heavy equipment makers, that rely on leading-edge, cost-effective information technology to develop, design, model and simulate complex products in an open workstation environment.
"Intel is delighted to work with EDS to ensure its customers can take full advantage of the choice that is offered through open, standards-based computing," said Tom Gibbs, industry marketing director, Intel. "For the first time, customers can get higher performance for CAD, CAM and CAE solutions on Itanium 2-based workstations, a space that has traditionally been limited to proprietary systems. EDS' NX portfolio on Intel architecture delivers best in class 64-bit technology to manufacturing companies of all sizes, enabling improved product quality and time-to-market at a very affordable price."
The Itanium 2 processor is designed to deliver leading performance on technical computing workloads, secure transactions, enterprise resource planning workloads, and raw processor performance. Manufacturers now have the ability to effectively work with much larger product models and more efficiently simulate their products and production processes.
