July 8, 2003 -- Desktop Engineering (DE) magazine is pleased to announce that the winner of its first annual Readers' Choice Product of the Year Award is SimMechanics from The MathWorks (Natick, MA; mathworks.com). DE readers voted online from among a group of thirteen products, each of which had been previously selected in 2002 to receive the monthly Readers' Choice Award.

The results of the poll were collected via DE's website, DE Online (deskeng.com). Readers of the magazine were directed to the voting page through an ad in the magazine's May and June issues as well as through a banner on the homepage. Votes were cast from May 1st through June 10th.

On June 30, 2003, DE Editors Jennifer Runyon and Sara Parker presented a trophy and award certificate to the Physical Modeling Team at The MathWorks headquarters.

"On behalf of The MathWorks and the SimMechanics development team, we are honored that the readers of Desktop Engineering have chosen SimMechanics as the Product of the Year," said Paul Barnard, Control Design Automation Marketing Director, The MathWorks. "This award further demonstrates our commitment to providing engineers with products that streamline the development process and provide measurable cost savings in modeling mechanical systems."

SimMechanics is a suite of tools for the engineering design and simulation of mechanical systems within the Simulink environment. SimMechanics provides control engineers in the automotive, aerospace, robotics, industrial equipment, and manufacturing industries with new capabilities for the model-based design approach. SimMechanics and Simulink allow engineers to model a physical plant and simulate the controller in one environment. SimMechanics enables improved communication and collaboration between separate working groups such as mechanical engineers and control system engineers, according to the company.

DE congratulates all of its 2002 Readers' Choice Award winners: ALGOR, COMSOL, CNC Software, Encad, Mechanical Dynamics, Omega Engineering, Primera Technology, PTC, SolidWorks, and SRAC.
