New VX CAD/CAM Version 8 Speeds Integrated Product Design and Manufacturing

Scores of Dynamic New Functions Help Users with Everything from Reverse Engineering, Visualization and Concepting to Mold Design, Machining and PDM

This new release incorporates powerful new functionality throughout, boosting daily productivity in design and manufacturing.

New Speed and Dynamic Interference Checking Added to Assembly Modeling
VX Version 8 dramatically speeds assembly modeling. Using VX burst technology, large assemblies can be read-in or manipulated up to 10 times faster. In the VX assembly manager, for instance, a complex assembly that previously took 10 seconds to display now takes just one second.

VX Version 8 assembly modeling now also offers dynamic interference checking. Users can check for interference between components by putting a linkage through its range of motion or open and close a mold to verify that everything fits. In either case, components will stop and the user alerted when interference is encountered.

VX Continues to Boost Productivity with Powerful CAM Tools
An important time-saving function added to VX Version 8 is Adaptive Feedrate Control (AFC), which automatically adjusts material feedrate. AFC provides more efficient operation and reduces wear, especially on large machine tools.

A new QuickMill high-speed machining function called Flow 3D lets users specify where a flow line should go in a mold cavity. This is especially useful for creating blow molds, where plastic flow must follow a specific curve. Mold design continues to be a VX strength. In addition to the new interference checking and Flow 3D, Version 8 includes a new option to create both core and mold cavity in a single easy step.

Rest milling has been enhanced with a ten-fold reduction in calculation time, and accuracy has been improved to produce even finer Class A surfaces – and more quickly.

VX Helps Designers Better Visualize and Create Product Families
A whole new shading mode in VX 8—edge highlighting—quickly reveals where a shape abruptly dips below the surface. As a practical application, edge highlighting helps users manage shapes with shallow indentations that were previously hard to detect without rotating the shape and interrupting the flow of work.

Designers will also appreciate a new modeling capability that extends multiple face edges in one command for quicker design development.

Product designers will also welcome new shaded echoing, which displays a shaded Gaussian view of the geometry not only as surfacing and design are proceeding, but also dynamically shaded in real time as the work is moved and turned.

A new Clone command duplicates multiple inter-related components and automatically provides hard links. This is not simply a duplication: the parts to be cloned can be sourced from different files, multiple models, and multiple CAM plans. Designers can now quickly create a new product line based on elements of existing products to retain familiar or successful features while establishing new design directions.

VX has included a robust reverse engineering capability for some time so VX users have not been forced to adopt an extra-cost point cloud system for extracting geometry from existing products or physical prototypes. Version 8 adds to its reverse engineering suite with direct import and opening of .STL files, making it possible to view STL data in VX and convert vertices to point cloud commands. In addition, the VX point cloud tool can convert all of the imported points to a single “block” entity that dramatically speeds up work with large point clouds, thereby eliminating a common problem in reverse engineering.

Free Integrated PDM for the Workgroup
VX Version 8 incorporates its own product data management (PDM) capability. Research shows that many companies operate at a workgroup level and prefer a simple workgroup approach to PDM rather than a full-blown, large-scale implementation. So at no additional cost, VX users will have the option of using the most-often requested PDM functions such as file and attribute searching, document control with read-write permissioning, versioning, and check-in/check-out. Because these tools are native rather than third-party solutions, the integration with VX is smooth and unobtrusive.
While VX is a highly integrated CAD/CAM system, it also supports the addition of third-party applications. In Version 8, an interface has been added that provides access to leading FEA/FEM applications such as COSMOS®, Algor® or MSC®.
