LMS Pimento Rev 4.50 Features New Acoustic and Structural Testing

Leuven, Belgium - June 3, 2003 - LMS introduced Rev 4.50 of LMS Pimento,
the laptop-sized portable analyzer, at the Testing Expo Exhibition in
Stuttgart, Germany. This new version of Pimento gains extended
functionalities for acoustic and structural testing, combined with the
continual ease-of-use enhancements. LMS Pimento, the portable noise and
vibration analyzer, gains new functions for sound intensity measurements and
extends the number of ISO standards for sound power measurements. In
addition, a full Modal Analysis package will be released to LMS Pimento

LMS Pimento Rev 4.50 offers a new set of functionalities to optimize
qualification-testing procedures for outdoor equipment, such as lawn
tractors, compressors, chain saws or hedge trimmers. In addition to the ISO
3744 standard and the EC/2000/14 directive that were already supported, Rev
4.50 now provides support of the ISO 3745 and ISO 3746. The ISO 3745
standard takes into account ambient pressure and temperature, analyzes sound
power in frequency bands and checks the directivity of the sound. The
supported ISO 3746 standard is less restrictive regarding background noise.
Rev 4.50 also allows data to be recorded in subsequent batches to perform a
full sound power measurement with a limited set of microphones.

In addition to qualification procedures for outdoor equipment, LMS Pimento
4.50 offers similar solutions for sound power measurements on computer
business equipment. Printers, desktop PCs and other computer appliances can
now be validated against the ISO 7779 standard. This standard also requires
the determination of the Sound Power Level at operator and bystander

Rev 4.50 introduces a new Acoustic Intensity that is used for measurement
and on-line visualization of time-based sound intensity functions. The
intensity probes that are used can be easily calibrated, as the Residual
Pressure Intensity calibration procedure accurately traces phase errors,
which LMS Pimento automatically corrects for during the measurement.

Most manufacturers want to do more than just qualify the noise or the
vibration performance of their products. They also want to analyze the root
cause of certain noise and vibration problems. They want to understand the
loads their product is subjected to and the inherent dynamic properties of
the structure itself. With Rev 4.50, LMS Pimento users can extend their
analyzer with a full modal analysis package to perform in-depth testing to
fully understand the dynamic behavior of their design. Pimento Rev 4.50
allows easily picking up measured data and automatically extracting modal
parameters and mode shapes for animation. It can be used both with hammer
impact or shaker measurements. It can scale the modes, run a modal model
validation and do an FRF synthesis.

About LMS Pimento:
LMS Pimento is the personal noise and vibration instrument for professionals
on the move. It can handle most tasks in general data acquisition & DSP,
rotating machinery, structural analysis, acoustics including sound power and
acoustic intensity measurements. It comes in a highly portable unit that is
equally at home in the lab or in the field. Starting with 4 channels, it is
easily expandable up to 24 channels and the results are compatible with the
LMS systems that are used by most Fortune 500 companies today.

LMS supports ASAM to Define New Noise and Vibration Data Model

A new framework for Test data, based on the existing ASAM ODS standards

Leuven, Belgium - June 3, 2003 - LMS international, the worldwide leader
in Test, CAE and Engineering Service solutions for functional performance
engineering, worked with the Association for Standardization of Automation
and Measuring Systems (ASAM) to define and promote a new international
standard for NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) data. LMS is a member of
ASAM since 2000, and contributed over 20 years of experience in NVH testing
and analysis.

Automotive OEMs and suppliers typically use a multitude of testing and
measurement solutions throughout their product development and manufacturing
process. However, these systems are mostly incompatible, which makes it
difficult to exchange data, and to operate different systems together. The
goal of ASAM is to reduce these unnecessary costs by defining standardized
interfaces for the test hardware and software used within the automotive
industry. ASAM brings end users and suppliers of automation and measurement
systems together to jointly define new models for test data.

The ASAM Open Data Services (ASAM ODS) standardizes the organization of and
access to measurement data. ODS includes a generic data model to describe
the test object in detail, the measurement procedure and equipment along
with the measurement data itself. On top of ODS, ASAM developed a number of
inter-related standards. For instance, standards for the integration of
micro-controller-based control systems for engines (ASAM MCD), for automated
calibration systems in engine test cells (ASAM ACI) and for measurement
devices (ASAM GDI).

To permit universal, platform independent access to NVH test data, LMS
actively participated in the development and the promotion of the ODS
standard for NVH. Using common ASAM ODS terms to describe the NVH test
objects will enable consistent data exchange between departments and
companies, even if they are active in different engineering disciplines. For
example, an engine sound power curve as function of rpm measured in the
Acoustics department can now be documented with an engine performance curve
measured during the calibration of the engine in another division of the

"LMS acknowledges the industry need to share test data among different
departments such as program management, conceptual design, component
development, and system integration. Easily sharing data between
departments, and even with suppliers is one of the keys to shortening the
development cycle. As such, LMS played a key role in defining and promoting
the ASAM-ODS standard for NVH", commented Filip Pintelon Corporate
Vice-President and General Manager Test Division at LMS. After the
completion of the ASAM ODS standard for NVH, LMS will integrate the standard
into its entire product line, from LMS Test.Lab for NVH testing and analysis
to LMS Virtual.Lab, its integrated platform for functional performance

A group of German automotive companies founded ASAM in 1991. Now ASAM
receives the support of European and US automotive OEMs and suppliers.
Currently there are over 125-member companies worldwide. As the automotive
industry becomes increasingly global the standards developed by ASAM will
not be limited to Europe, but will emerge as the recognized worldwide
standards. More information about ASAM can be found at www.asam.net/
