Kern AG Switches to SolidWorks 3D Mechanical Design Software to Design World's Fastest Envelope-Stuffing Machines

Guinness World Record Holder Chose SolidWorks for Its Short Learning Curve, Ease of Use, and Powerful Assembly Capabilities

CONCORD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 2, 2003-- Kern AG, one of the world's leading manufacturers of inserting machines and document processing equipment, has switched to SolidWorks(R) three-dimensional (3D) mechanical design software to design all of its products, SolidWorks announced today. The Guinness Book of World Records has officially recognized Kern AG as producer of the world's fastest inserting system, a machine capable of filling 26,000 envelopes per hour.

Headquartered in Konolfingen near Bern, Switzerland, Kern AG is switching from its previous 2D design software to SolidWorks for its simplicity of learning, ease of use, and ability to smoothly integrate with Kern's existing product data management system. Other deciding factors include SolidWorks' capabilities for easy assembly and motion analysis, as well as Kern AG's long-standing relationship with Solid Solutions AG, an authorized SolidWorks reseller.

"We chose SolidWorks to bring bigger quality improvements to our customers more often," said Wolfgang Freyer, R&D, head of mechanical development, Kern AG. "In addition to its powerful design capabilities, SolidWorks eDrawings, PhotoWorks(TM), and Animator features help us present our designs more effectively and persuasively."

In the future, Kern AG expects SolidWorks to support the production of spare part catalogs and streamlined data exchange between engineering, production, and suppliers. In fact, one Kern AG subcontractor has already purchased SolidWorks, eliminating time wasted recreating designs from scratch in different computer-aided design (CAD) formats.

Kern will operate SolidWorks with partner software Design Space Advansia from CAD-FEM for structural analysis and Dynamic Designer from Mechanical Dynamics Inc., a SolidWorks Gold Partner, for motion analysis. Kern AG also plans to use InduDrive, an add-on to Dynamic Designer from InduSim GmbH, for curve optimization and additional motion analysis.

"Small design changes can have a dramatic impact on machine speed and efficiency, especially at the world-class volumes Kern AG products achieve," said Michel Gros, SolidWorks' vice president, Europe. "That's why we've optimized our software to enable customers to make changes fast, visualize them in action, and bring their innovations quickly to market."
