MOORPARK, CA – May 29, 2003 – Gibbs and Associates, developer of GibbsCAM, computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) software for programming computer numerically controlled (CNC) machine tools, announced today that they will participate in the 2003 National Tooling and Manufacturing Association (NTMA) Technical Conference being held June 2-3, 2003 at Mandalay Bay Conference Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. John Callen, Gibbs and Associates' vice president of marketing, will present a paper, "Understanding the Realities of Innovation" at the conference. The paper, which is based on Mr. Callen's more than 25 years of experience in advanced or next generation CAD/CAM technology research and product development, examines the gap between the end- users' current state of technology adoption readiness and the rate of technology evolution. Three prominent advanced technologies will be used to illustrate the difference between their promise and their practical application. Suggestions as to how to gradually adopt these new technologies to gain experience with them while mitigating risk will also be offered.

"Technology continues to evolve at an ever increasing rate," states Mr. Callen "that most companies today are extremely challenged just trying to keep up with the advances. For their own security, companies often lag one or more generations behind the bleeding edge of the latest technology curve. And you can't really blame them given that despite the claims being made many of these new technologies are not necessarily production-ready."

Mr. Callen has been involved in a number of industry working groups dealing with the development and application of advanced technologies, such as the Industry Review Board of STEP-NC, the CAD/CAM Interoperability and CAM/CNC Interoperability sub-groups of the Open Modular Architecture Controller (OMAC) program, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology's (NIST) Smart Machine Tool initiative. He was recognized by STEP-NC program for his contributions to STEP-NC and the Super Model Project. In his role as vice president of marketing at Gibbs and Associates, he maintains oversight of next generation technologies to determine their appropriateness for incorporation into GibbsCAM.

The 2003 NTMA Technical Conference is NTMA's newest event designed to give precision manufacturers an understanding of cutting edge technologies, and how to leverage this knowledge to gain a competitive edge in a global economy. For more information on the event, visit: www.ntma.org.
