Cyon Research Announces Keynote Speakers for COFES 2010

Bo Burlingham to address business leadership in building great companies; Omid Moghadam to speak on the opportunities for engineering software vendors to play a disruptive role in bioinformatics; both will keynote the 11th annual Congress on the Future of Engineering Software.

Bethesda, MD, December 17, 2009 -– Cyon Research Corporation, host of the Congress on the Future of Engineering Software (COFES), announced today that Omid Moghadam and Bo Burlinham will keynote COFES 2010.

COFES is the annual by-invitation-only gathering of the leadership from the community of vendors, users, press, and analysts from the domain of software for design and engineering.

Geomagic Corporation is sponsoring Bo Burlingham’s keynote: “ Got Mojo?” Burlingham, editor-at-large of Inc. Magazine and chairman of the Small Giants Community (, is a brilliant commentator on the nature of business and how it can be harmonious with the pursuit of greatness.

"Burlingham's message is particularly relevant to the software entrepreneurs in the COFES audience," says COFES co-founder and visionary Joel Orr. "Understanding the relative benefits and disadvantages of size is powerful."

Burlingham’s book, Small Giants: Companies That Choose To Be Great Instead of Big was a finalist for the 2006 Financial Times/Goldman Sachs Business Book of the Year award. According to Cyon Research president & CEO Brad Holtz, Burlingham’s most recent book, co-authored with Norm Brodsky, The Knack: How Street-Smart Entrepreneurs Learn to Handle Whatever Comes Up, “…is a must read for any current or prospective entrepreneur.”

In addition to Small Giants and The Knack, Burlingham co-authored two books with Jack Stack, the pioneer of open-book management. One of the books, The Great Game of Business, has sold more than 300,000 copies. The other, A Stake in the Outcome, has been called “the first management  classic of the new millennium.

“I am delighted that Bo Burlingham has agreed to keynote COFES 2010,” says Ping Fu, president and CEO of Geomagic and 2005 Inc. Magazine Entrepreneur of the Year. “Bo is a passionate advocator, thought leader, and reporter for entrepreneurship, he brings a refreshing and grounded prospective on what makes a company great in any time and any community. We can all learn something from Bo’s heroes.”

Omid Moghadam’s keynote: “ From Product Informatics to Bio-Informatics” will discuss how software vendors from design and engineering fields have a disruptive opportunity in bioinformatics.

According to Moghadam, “…modest successes in developing software for biological modeling have never made it to the market, since any company that was able to show success has promptly transformed itself into a drug discovery firm, instead of becoming a software tools provider to the industry. This is akin to a company with a CAD/CAM package deciding to turn itself into an airframe manufacturer.”

As an inventor (he holds 32 patents) and leader straddling both the engineering and healthcare domains, Moghadam is in a unique position to address the applicability of the resources of the engineering software community to the developing needs of the explosively growing field of Bioinformatics and Genomics.

Omid Moghadam is the chair of the National Development Board for the Ignite Institute for Individual Health and recently joined Harvard Medical School’s Center for Biomedical Informatics. Moghadam is perhaps best known for his work at Intel as head of product strategy. During his tenure at Intel, Moghadam led the team responsible for Intel’s push into 3D graphics. His experience at COFES provided much of the proof point for his team which eventually resulted in the definition of what became project Alamere, which evolved into Intel’s new Larrabee chip (due to launch in 2010).  Later, still at Intel, Moghadam led Intel’s entrance into electronic health records and genomics industries. Later on, he founded Dossia Corporation, a national network for consumer-controlled personal health records.
