Denmark's Aalborg University Adds SolidWorks and COSMOS to Its Professional-Track Engineering Programs

Students, faculty, and staff create and test designs with 300 seats of SolidWorks 3D mechanical design and 50 of COSMOS analysis software

CONCORD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 7, 2003-- Denmark's Aalborg University has purchased 300 seats of SolidWorks(R) three dimensional mechanical design software to help students learn professional design processes on projects ranging from badminton racquets to shock absorbers for high-speed trains, SolidWorks announced today. The 300-seat SolidWorks installation also includes 50 seats of COSMOSWorks(TM) and COSMOSMotion(TM) software, as part of the SolidWorks Education Edition product.

Aalborg University's teaching approach mirrors the types of work group environments the students will encounter in professional settings after they graduate. Students work in groups on defined topics such as load carrying structures, lightweight structures, or mechanical systems. They pick a product - for example, a carbon fiber bicycle frame, racing boat, or wind turbine component - design it with SolidWorks and then test it with COSMOS. SolidWorks' suite of analytical applications helps introduce design analysis by electronically simulating mechanical operation and physical behavior. Students also use eDrawings to exchange designs with their faculty advisors and each other.

"This style of student collaboration is ideally suited for learning state-of-the-art applications like SolidWorks, the standard in 3D computer-aided design software," said Aalborg doctoral student Jan Stegmann, who serves on the Institute of Mechanical Engineering's information technology committee and participated in the SolidWorks selection. "Students use the software the way it is used in the design engineering industry, namely as an integrated tool during the entire design process, from initial idea to final design, documentation, and presentation."

Aalborg, a 13,000-student institution founded in 1974, is one of two Danish universities that offers master's and doctorate-level engineering educations. The university places its graduates in Denmark's top companies, including Vestas Wind Systems and Bang & Olufsen electronics.

"Aalborg University's program simulates a professional environment, which is a big reason why the school chose SolidWorks and COSMOS," said Rosanne Kramer, director of worldwide education markets for SolidWorks Corporation. "Our products are so widely used that it's inevitable students will encounter them once they enter the job market. Aalborg's program ensures students are ready to take on productive roles immediately upon graduating."

About Aalborg University

Aalborg University (AAU) was inaugurated in 1974 as the fifth Danish university. Since then, its enrollment has more than tripled to the current enrollment of approximately 13,000. AAU conducts teaching and research to the highest level in the fields of humanities, engineering, natural sciences, and social sciences. In 1995 the Engineering College of Esbjerg became part of Aalborg University.
