WDS Uses SolidWorks 3D PartStream.NET to Let Customers Try Parts as They Buy

Engineers can download 10,000 part models in more than 26 CAD formats
to learn in minutes, not weeks, how parts will function in their
designs

CONCORD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 2, 2003-- WDS Ltd. has selected the SolidWorks 3D PartStream.NET(R) service to accelerate and simplify the product design and parts purchasing processes for its customers, including some of the most prestigious names in the aerospace industry, SolidWorks announced today.

WDS is Europe's market leader in standard parts and production equipment for manufacturers. It supplies more than 10,000 standard parts - such as clamps, screws, knobs, hinges, and wheels - for use in the design and manufacture of jigs, fixtures, special tooling, and consumer products.

WDS's Web-based parts catalog relies on 3D PartStream.NET to let customers interactively view any of the 10,000-plus catalog items from all angles and instantly download 3D models in their preferred computer-aided design (CAD) format. Once a model is downloaded, WDS customers can see immediately how the part or tool operates in their designs. WDS supports all major CAD products through its catalog, giving WDS a distinct advantage over competitors who offer designs only on CD-ROM and in just two CAD file formats. Competitors' customers are left to recreate drawings and models in the CAD system they use, which can take days, or even weeks in a complicated assembly.

"We're not dictating CAD file format to the customer," said Peter Heselton, marketing manager for WDS. "We're packaging drawings and models in the format our customers want, and we're completely eliminating their need to recreate designs in their own CAD tools just to see how the part will function. Since we've done all the hard work for the customer, we've reduced a typical three-day re-design time to three minutes. Our extremely busy fourth quarter confirms that our customers - both existing and new - are truly benefiting."

WDS chose the 3D PartStream.NET service because of its ease of use, flexibility, and product support, according to Peter Crowder, operations manager for WDS. For example, new customers can begin working with the WDS catalog and manipulating models within seconds of arriving at the site. They need no special CAD knowledge or software. WDS chose SolidWorks(R) 3D CAD software to design the parts at the outset because it lets the company quickly customize standard models.

The 3D PartStream.NET service includes comprehensive reporting features, enabling WDS to record a sharp increase in customer activity compared with previous fourth quarters. WDS has recorded 200,000 visitors in the first three months since the catalogue went online in September. The service has also brought new customers from new markets to WDS. For example, new prospects in shop fitting and architectural environments have flocked to the WDS catalog to shop for standard and bespoke (custom) parts, praising the speed and simplicity with which they can download its 3D CAD models.

"WDS is proving that there's a lot more to an online catalog than looking at the products and imagining how they'll work," said Bob Noftle, general manager of 3D content solutions at SolidWorks Corporation. "Customers want to try a part out immediately and make the purchase in the same quick visit. WDS has made that possible, and their sales are showing why these capabilities matter."

Authorized SolidWorks reseller NT CADCAM helped WDS launch the site. NT CADCAM built 3D models in SolidWorks, migrated them to 3D PartStream.NET, and built all back-office support. The company also provides WDS with ongoing software support and training.
