Latest release of D-Cubed's CDM, version 29.0

D-Cubed announces the latest release of its Collision Detection Manager (CDM), the leading interactive collision detection and clearance computation component for accurate models in dimension-driven assembly part positioning and kinematic motion simulation environments.

Performance enhancements: A general focus across every CDM release is to improve performance. One of the CDM's strengths since its first release is its interactive performance on accurate parts in assemblies and mechanisms that are in motion. Such performance is achieved by a sophisticated combination of algorithms that minimise the re-computations required at each step of a motion simulation.

One aspect of these algorithms is the use of a hierarchy of boxes around parts, faces and edges to reduce the number of processor-intensive computations on the accurate underlying geometries. However, such boxes can overlap at each step in a simulation even though the underlying geometries in question will never collide. This release of the CDM can determine that the geometries within some of these boxes can never collide and will eliminate these boxes from the collision computations at each subsequent step in the motion simulation.

Enhanced support for faceted models: The CDM also supports assemblies containing faceted models, or indeed mixtures of faceted and accurate models. Furthermore, all faces in a part may be faceted or just some of the faces, for example, just the computationally intensive parametric surfaces.

One focus of this release has been on issues specifically relating to the performance and reliability of the CDM when using models containing faceted data. For example, the performance optimisations that minimise re-computations on assemblies of accurate moving parts are now more extensively implemented on faceted parts. Also, applications that have integrated the CDM can now easily output their faceted data for import into D-Cubed's own in-house bug testing and performance analysis application, enabling integration and performance issues to be efficiently resolved.

First released in 1999, the CDM has rapidly achieved broad market acceptance, particularly with mid-range mechanical CAD applications, including Inventor from Autodesk, Solid Edge from EDS PLM Solutions and SolidWorks from SolidWorks Corporation.

The CDM's success is due to a range of novel algorithms specifically designed to detect collisions and compute clearances on accurate solids in an interactive assembly environment, rather than being derived from the traditional, and unnecessarily intensive, Boolean approach. Commonly used in conjunction with D-Cubed’s 3D DCM assembly part positioning and kinematic solving component, the CDM allows designers to interact with their assembly models with a heightened sense of realism and solidity, eliminating design errors caused by interpenetrating parts.
