GibbsCAM® Plays Key Role in STEP-NC Demonstration at Jet Propulsion Laboratory

MOORPARK, CA – 28. January. 2003 – Gibbs and Associates, developer of GibbsCAM, computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) software for programming computer numerically controlled (CNC) machine tools, announced today that GibbsCAM will play a key role in facilitating the STEP-NC demonstration at the upcoming 6th Industrial Review Board to be held at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, CA, on January 29-30, 2003. STEP Tools Inc, (Troy, NY) will demonstrate a STEP-NC adaptor that they have implemented for GibbsCAM using GibbsCAM's Developer Toolkit (DTK) application development software, which provides full access to GibbsCAM's data structures and powerful capabilities. The STEP-NC adaptor converts information contained within a STEP-NC (AP238) file into GibbsCAM data structures and then uses GibbsCAM to generate toolpath and output machine- specific CNC code for JPL's Fadal machining centers. The machining process can be visually previewed using GibbsCAM's Cut Part Rendering integrated process simulation functionality. GibbsCAM's Reporter functionality can be used to automatically generate corresponding process documentation.

The STEP-NC adaptor is a prototype of a next-generation technology extension for GibbsCAM. It provides a glimpse of the type of capability potentially enabled by STEP-NC once the standard is officially adopted. The International Standards Organization expects to move the proposed STEP-NC data format to Draft International Standard (DIS) status later this year. The DIS rating is a key milestone in the proposed format becoming an international standard.

The demonstration at JPL is the culmination of a three year project that was funding by the National Institutes of Standards and Technology's (NIST) Advanced Technology Projects (ATP) program. Gibbs and Associates was an active member of the Industrial Review Board for that project. Gibbs and Associates' industry leading position in controller-embedded CNC programming systems fully compatible with their off-line programming systems provided a unique experience and perspective to the STEP-NC project. STEP Tools will now transition their STEP-NC program into a collection of industrial pilot projects with a number of manufacturers, in which Gibbs and Associates will participate as a technology partner.
