Optimal Solutions Helps Speedo

Idaho Falls, IDAHO, United States of America – August 6, 2008

Dolphins swim faster than they should be able to. Physicists and biologists have for decades declared dolphin speeds impossible, given the density of water and the animal’s muscle structure. This paradox is a problem that hopes to be unraveled by looking at the powerful motion (“kick”) of the dolphin’s tail.

When Speedo, the world’s leading swimwear producer, as well as one of the most tenacious users of new and innovative technology, wanted to learn more about the drag-reduction mechanism associated with this animal’s tail, they came to the professionals in the dynamics of fluid flow: Optimal Solutions Software, LLC.

Optimal Solutions, developer of Sculptor, the world’s leading Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) real-time design deformation technology, was chosen because the Company works with the automotive, motorsports and aerospace industries—virtually any industry that designs components that entail fluid (gas or liquid) flow—to solve the respective companies’ “lift” and “drag” issues.

The OSS/Speedo relationship, however, started on Tuesday, June 8, 2004, when, intrigued by Barry Bixler’s presentation at the (ANSYS) Fluent 2004 Users’ Group Meeting entitled, “The Story Behind the Fastskin FSII”, Mark Landon, President of Optimal Solutions Software, LLC, cornered Mr. Bixler after his presentation and struck up a two-way technical dialogue about the use of CFD to analyze a swimmer’s strokes. This developed into not only a synergistic technical relationship between the two men, but a fast friendship, as well. When Mr. Bixler passed away last year, Mark reminisced, “Barry was one of the nicest people I have ever met; that, coupled with his solid engineering experience and the groundbreaking research he did to analyze a swimmer’s strokes using CFD, always made for an interesting and intriguing conversation. Barry will be truly missed…”

Now working with Speedo Aqualab in Nottingham, United Kingdom, and its other technology partners ANSYS, Inc. (Nasdaq: ANSS, whose leading engineering simulation technology pinpointed areas of high friction on the athletes’ bodies and guided the placement of low-resistance panels), and the University of Nottingham, Optimal Solutions is utilizing its first-class Sculptor Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) real-time design deformation technology to enhance the thrust and minimize the drag relating to timing and articulation of a swimmer’s kick movements.

About Optimal Solutions Software, LLC – www.optimalsolutions.us
Optimal Solutions Software, LLC, is the developer of a unique technology which performs optimal shape design for the computational fluid dynamic (CFD) and finite element analysis (FEA) industries. With the recent launch of SculptorPLUS, the next release of Optimal Solutions Software’s major offering to the CFD/FEA industry, OSS is now better able to answer the question of how to improve engineering designs—in the most cost-effective, timely manner.
Using proprietary Arbitrary Shape Deformation (ASD) technology, the user can easily and intuitively change the shape of a model in a smooth and controlled manner—in real time. Major changes that previously took months now take days; days are now hours; and previous hours’ changes are now achieved into minutes.
Optimal Solutions’ Sculptor suite of software products enables design engineers to reduce the need for costly physical testing and prototyping. Any company or industry that designs components with fluid flow, heat and mass transfer, and/or chemically-reacting flows; including combustion, aero elasticity, as well as structural design, benefit from using the Sculptor products.
