The latest upgrade to Delcam’s PowerINSPECT inspection software includes support for the inspection of components, prototypes and tooling against triangle files, such as the STL files used in rapid prototyping and Delcam’s own DMT format. Other enhancements include an option to simplify the inspection of complex parts by using a shaded model, the ability to inspect against a wider range of CAD formats and the addition of the torus to the types of standard geometry that can be inspected.

The ability to inspect against STL files will be valuable to all companies providing a rapid prototyping or manufacturing service. Like other manufacturing companies, prototype manufacturers can no longer rely on their reputations as any guarantee of the quality of their work. They must be able to prove the quality of the parts they supply with the detailed inspection reports that PowerINSPECT can provide.

For companies using PowerMILL for machining, the use of the DMT format will enable inspection of the component being machined at any stage in the manufacturing process. For example, it will be possible to check that the correct amount of stock has been left on the component during roughing. Similarly, the extent of any damage caused perhaps by a tool breakage can be accessed accurately and a decision made as to whether the part can still be completed within tolerance or whether it will have to be scrapped.

Additional CAD formats supported by the new PowerINSPECT release include Solid Edge and Cimatron. These have been added to the existing range, which covers all the main CAD systems, such as CATIA and Pro/Engineer, and neutral formats like IGES.

The ability to use a shaded model of the component will make PowerINSPECT even simpler to use, especially with large or complex parts, and will also make the reports even easier to understand. The option to use a wireframe representation of the CAD data will still be available when the user prefers to see all of the measured points at the same time.

As with the other geometric entities supported with PowerINSPECT, the torus entity can be inspected for both form and position. The full range of standard geometry that can be inspected with PowerINSPECT also includes circles, cylinders, cones and rectangles.
