MOORPARK, CA - October 12, 2006 - Gibbs and Associates, developer of GibbsCAM®, computer-aided manufacturing software for programming CNC machine tools, announced today that the company has provided its GibbsCAM software along with the GibbsCAM Developer's ToolKit application programming interface (API) to the University of Auckland (Auckland, New Zealand) to support a research program on STEP-NC. As part of this arrangement, Gibbs and Associates will have access to any of the technologies developed during this program.

"Gibbs and Associates has been an active supporter of the International Standards Organization's STEP-NC standardization effort since its inception," explains John Callen, Gibbs' VP of Marketing. "When STEP-NC activity first began here in the United States, Gibbs was a member of the Industry Review Board. The initial STEP-NC demos held at General Dynamics Land Systems (Scranton, PA facility) and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (Pasadena, CA), both GibbsCAM users, were based on prototype extensions to GibbsCAM."

STEP-NC is a next generation data format being developed by the International Standards Organization used to communicate design and process information to CNC machine tools. Still in its early adoption phase, STEP-NC, formally known as ISO 14649 and ISO 10303 AP238, offers the promise of minimizing the post processor overhead incurred by CAM systems by providing a single, standardized format to interface to CNC machine tools. In addition, the STEP-NC data format significantly expands the amount of information transferred to CNC machine tools over current RS274-D CNC code. This expanded information supports more advanced capabilities of next generation machine tools and is seen as a key enabler for such programs as the Smart Machine Platform Initiative (SMPI) and the Next Generation Manufacturing Technology Initiative (NGMTI).

"We appreciate Gibbs and Associates' support of our research," states Dr. Xun Xu, the STEP-NC program leader at University of Auckland. "GibbsCAM has been an excellent platform technology for other STEP-NC prototypes. STEP-NC has two parts, Application Reference Model (ISO 14649) and Application Interpreted Model (ISO 10303 AP 238). Some preliminary work has been carried out to port AP 238 data to GibbsCAM. The research program we are undertaking concerns porting ISO 14649 to GibbsCAM." Dr. Xu's heads one of the four major research groups worldwide working towards an integrated STEP-compliant CAD/CAM/CNC system. The other three groups are those from Europe (EU and UK), USA and Korea.

Initial results from the University of Auckland's STEP-NC program are expected as early as by the end of 2006.
