Accelerated Technologies Begins Testing of WaterShed(tm), a New Rapid Prototyping Material

Cincinnati, OH -- Rapid Prototyping 2002, April 30 2002--Accelerated Technologies, Inc. has been selected by DSM Somos as the first beta test site for Somos WaterShed(tm), an innovative material for rapid prototyping. WaterShed, designed for the stereolithography process, produces prototypes that promise to be much stronger and more resilient than previous materials due to its unique moisture absorption rate.

“Clients rely on our company to provide processes and materials that have been tested and proven under real-world situations,” stated Mike Durham, general manager, Accelerated Technologies. “We believe this groundbreaking technology will provide the key to using prototypes for extended periods and are eager to put it to the test.”

Watershed produces prototypes with a moisture absorption rate of only 0.24%, which is more than 80% less than other commonly used resins. Moisture absorption, through direct contact with water or exposure to humidity, is known to degrade mechanical properties and dimensional accuracy in stereolithography prototypes. Testing has shown that high humidity can decrease tensile and flexural properties by 30% in only one month. WaterShed's moisture resistance offers long-term protection such that the prototypes can be used for form, fit and functional testing for extended periods. Mike Durham believes that WaterShed(tm) will address the needs of a previously untapped market. Durham said, "After contacting key customers to determine the applicability and need for a water-resistant material, we found that the demand was extraordinary. Overall, this material will do very well since it combines translucency and outstanding material properties with its moisture resistance."

According to statements made by DSM Somos, WaterShed offers mechanical properties that mimic the engineered thermoplastic PBT (Polybutylene Terephthalate). Exceptional tensile and flexural strength combine to make strong, rigid rapid prototypes. Like WaterClear(tm), the first material in this family, WaterShed delivers a translucent prototype suitable for flow visualization and analysis of the inner working of complex assemblies. Accelerated Technologies is accepting orders for WaterShed during the beta testing period.
