Southampton, UK. 29 March, 2006. – ICEM Ltd., the leading developer of surface modelling, surface model validation and design visualisation software, has announced that its ICEM Surf software recently enabled Maier S. Co-op, the Spain-based designer and manufacturer of plastic moulded parts for automotive vehicles and other products, to design and produce new wheel trims for the Toyota Yaris in less time and at less cost than other comparable projects.
Toyota requested Maier to design and manufacture the wheel trims for use on the special edition Yaris Expo. With a tight budget and a short timeline for the project, Maier decided to use the ICEM Surf software suite from initial design ideas, through styling and design development to production tooling design.
Highly accurate surface models of the wheel trim were generated by ICEM Surf from the initial design sketches, with the final surface data being used directly in the design of the mould tools required for the manufacturing process. Earlier, as the design was developed, ICEM Surf’s Renderer module was used to create photo-realistic visualisations of the wheel trim incorporating graphics, surface textures and realistic shadows, for use in live design review meetings between designers from Maier and Toyota. During these meetings, any required changes to the design, for either aesthetic or for manufacturability reasons, were able to be undertaken using ICEM Surf’s dynamic modelling tools. These enabled the model to be modified without the need to re-create geometry, with the results being displayed in real-time.
“The use of ICEM Surf on this project for Toyota enabled us to significantly reduce the overall design-to-manufacturing timescale while keeping Toyota fully involved as the project progressed,” said José Luis Cuesta, wheel trim product manager, Maier Technology Centre. “It also enabled us to ensure that we could produce a high quality product that was economical to manufacture and that was delivered on time and within budget.”
Based in Spain and part of the Mondragon Corporation Cooperative - the largest cooperative in the world - Maier designs and manufacturers plastic components and assemblies for the automotive industry, household appliances and consumer electronics products. The company has plants in Spain, the Czech Republic and the UK, offices in France, Germany, Sweden, Japan and China and joint ventures in Turkey and Japan.
