Primax Electronics Uses PTC Windchill To Implement Environmental Regulatory Compliance Plan

NEEDHAM, Mass.—(BUSINESS WIRE)—Sept. 6, 2005— PTC (Nasdaq: PMTC), the Product Development Company(TM), today announced that Primax, ranked 84th out of 1,000 companies in a survey of Taiwan manufacturers by BusinessWeek Magazine, has deployed PTC Windchill for environmental regulatory compliance. This is an evolution of their current Windchill implementation to meet new requirements for international environmental regulatory compliance procedures. These new capabilities were installed and implementation testing completed in just two months.

The European Union, China and various states within the United States have announced new environmental protection laws and effective dates aimed at manufacturers of electronic equipment and related products. For Taiwan's high-tech manufacturing industry, which depends on the export of these goods, these laws have become an urgent issue. Its products include optical-electronic products like digital scanners, computer peripherals such as mouse products, paper handling equipment and communication accessories. As a result of these regulations and associated client demands, Primax began evaluating environmental regulatory compliance issues as early as the fourth quarter of 2003. At that time, the company estimated that most of its clients would eventually have to satisfy environmental regulations. Consequently, Primax believes that addressing environmental protection is a strategic program that will directly impact the company's revenue opportunity. As such, Primax has approached the issue systematically rather than through a case-by-case approach, as it is more scalable and cost-effective.

Mr. Honda Lee, director of the Engineering Service Center, Corporate Quality Assurance Department of Primax, said, "Primax started using Windchill in 2000 as its Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) system. Subsequently, Primax began evaluating environmental regulatory compliance solutions from a variety of leading vendors. After the evaluation, Primax found that extending the use of Windchill for environmental regulatory compliance was the quickest and most economical way to integrate environmental regulatory compliance into new product designs."

"Implementing Windchill for environmental regulatory compliance was a strategic corporate initiative for Primax, as almost every department in the company had distinct requirements. Providing a solution to help ensure that the company's more than 1,500 products and supporting material of tens of thousands of components meet current environmental requirements is quite an undertaking," said Chad Hawkinson, director of electronics and high tech, product & market strategy, PTC. "In addition, Primax is also tasked by the challenge to re-certify components, process tests, process controls, and even re-design some products. By incorporating environmental regulatory compliance capabilities with their Windchill-based PLM system, users are better able to manage the process and analyze products for compliance in real-time. This helps save re-work and improves time-to-market."

Specifically, Primax was able to leverage their PTC PLM system to provide support for several key environmental regulatory compliance requirements including:

-- Reducing the number of redundant parts used by different organizations

-- Managing component identification, restricting substance survey collection and storage and testing reports

-- Analyzing components for quantities of RoHS restricted substances

-- Searching BOM information and related material structure to determine compliance

-- Identifying lead-free production procedures required for specific products and plants

-- Exchanging symbols and attributes, and collaborating with suppliers
