Fiat Adopts ESI Group’s Vibro-Acoustic Simulation Software To Optimize NVH Process

AutoSEA2 helps automotive engineers meet critical noise and vibration performance levels while reducing costly trials

Paris, May 13 2004: Elasis, Fiat’s research center in Southern Italy, has selected AutoSEA2 from ESI Group to improve automotive acoustic design. Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) are today an important part of virtual product development. AutoSEA2 addresses automakers’ critical need for the control of broadband airborne and structure-borne noise. The product relies on the Statistical Energy Analysis (SEA) method which is well suited to broadband and high frequency noise predictions.

In collaboration with the University of Naples, Elasis engineers used AutoSEA2 to improve the analysis of vehicle components across a wide frequency range. They were able to accurately predict the high frequency structural and acoustical response of a car’s longitudinal section.

"AutoSEA2 allows engineers to build complex mathematical energy flow models of real structures and to predict responses to simulate vibration and acoustic environments," said Anna Galasso, senior CAE specialist, vehicle dynamic, acoustic and vibration department, Elasis. "Several SEA models were successfully improved thanks to AutoSEA2’s user friendly environment."

To refine the structural and acoustic previsions, multiple designs were developed, from a very basic panel model to the full model of the car’s longitudinal section. The door model includes the structural glass behavior and the damping loss factor of external door panels.

"Comparisons between simulation results and experimental tests conducted in Elasis’ anechoic chamber are very good," adds Anna Galasso. "The difference between simulation data and measurements is, for some models, less than 3 dB up to 5,000 Hz."

Elasis projects are now focused on a multi-purpose SEA model of a complete vehicle, allowing engineers to predict both structural dynamic behavior and the acoustical response of the vehicle. Fiat’s increased use of simulation is expected to reduce design time and costs, while reaching even more stringent NVH standards.

About ESI Group’s Vibro-Acoustic Solutions

ESI Group’s vibro-acoustic software portfolio includes AutoSEA2, a real-time broadband noise and vibration prediction analysis and design software; NOVA, a software package dedicated to the analysis of layered acoustic systems for the transportation industries; Foam-X, a data acquisition and processing software for identifying the acoustic properties of poro-elastic materials from impedance tube measurement, and RAYON. Using both finite element methods and boundary element methods, RAYON predicts the vibro-acoustic response at low frequencies and is well suited for the prediction of trimmed vehicles' acoustic performance.

About ESI Group
ESI Group is a pioneer and world leading provider of digital simulation software for prototyping and manufacturing processes that take into account the physics of materials. ESI Group has developed an entire suite of coherent industry-oriented applications to realistically simulate a product's behavior during testing, to fine tune the manufacturing processes in synergy with the desired product performance, and to evaluate the environment's impact on product usage. ESI Group's product portfolio, which has been industrially validated and combined in multi-trade value chains, represents a unique collaborative, virtual engineering solution, known as the Virtual Try-Out Space (VTOS), enabling a continuous improvement on the virtual prototype. By drastically reducing costs and development lead times, VTOS solutions offer major competitive advantages by progressively eliminating the need for physical prototypes. With revenues close to 49 million euros in fiscal year 2003, ESI Group (Nouveau March麠Euronext Paris - Software - Euroclear 6584 - Bloomberg ESI FP - Reuters ESIG.LN) employs almost 500 high-level specialists worldwide. The company and its global network of agents provide sales and technical support to customers in more than 30 countries.
