Fiat Adopts ESI Group’s Vibro-Acoustic Simulation Software To Optimize NVH Process
AutoSEA2 helps automotive engineers meet critical noise and vibration performance levels while reducing costly trials
Paris, May 13 2004: Elasis, Fiat’s research center in Southern Italy, has selected AutoSEA2 from ESI Group to improve automotive acoustic design. Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) are today an important part of virtual product development. AutoSEA2 addresses automakers’ critical need for the control of broadband airborne and structure-borne noise. The product relies on the Statistical Energy Analysis (SEA) method which is well suited to broadband and high frequency noise predictions.
In collaboration with the University of Naples, Elasis engineers used AutoSEA2 to improve the analysis of vehicle components across a wide frequency range. They were able to accurately predict the high frequency structural and acoustical response of a car’s longitudinal section.
"AutoSEA2 allows engineers to build complex mathematical energy flow models of real structures and to predict responses to simulate vibration and acoustic environments," said Anna Galasso, senior CAE specialist, vehicle dynamic, acoustic and vibration department, Elasis. "Several SEA models were successfully improved thanks to AutoSEA2’s user friendly environment."
To refine the structural and acoustic previsions, multiple designs were developed, from a very basic panel model to the full model of the car’s longitudinal section. The door model includes the structural glass behavior and the damping loss factor of external door panels.
"Comparisons between simulation results and experimental tests conducted in Elasis’ anechoic chamber are very good," adds Anna Galasso. "The difference between simulation data and measurements is, for some models, less than 3 dB up to 5,000 Hz."
Elasis projects are now focused on a multi-purpose SEA model of a complete vehicle, allowing engineers to predict both structural dynamic behavior and the acoustical response of the vehicle. Fiat’s increased use of simulation is expected to reduce design time and costs, while reaching even more stringent NVH standards.
