World’s First Commercial, Fully Integrated, Engineering Fluid Dynamics Tool For CATIA V5 Offers Ease-of-Use, Accuracy and Performance

Frankfurt, Germany (February 24, 2004) --- NIKA GmbH, the developer of FloWorks and EFD.Lab, market-leading Engineering Fluid Dynamics (EFD) simulation programs for fluid flow and heat transfer, today announced the availability of EFD.V5, a seamless integration between Dassault Syst譥s’ CATIA V5 and NIKA’s EFD analysis technology. Since EFD.V5 is seamlessly integrated with the CATIA V5 user interface and is fully embedded into its feature tree, users will be able to create designs with CATIA and then immediately proceed to analyzing and optimizing those designs without having to learn a new user interface or dealing with any data translation issues. By providing CATIA V5 users with powerful analysis of the simultaneous flows of gases or liquids, heat transfer and forces on immersed or surrounding solids, EFD.V5 will enable them to develop better quality products, saving both design time and development cost.

“Since EFD.V5 uses the same geometry kernel as CATIA V5, EFD.V5 can use data directly from CATIA V5” said Frank Wies, R&D manager at ROTAREX Group in Luxembourg, a market leading manufacturer of valves, fittings and regulators for various gas applications. “We are not even required to create the flow domain separately – the system can automatically detect those regions. As a result, when we change the original CAD data, the analysis model is always current. This feature is a huge time saver and allows us to effortlessly conduct analysis on the most up-to-date design on our systems.“

"EFD.V5 closes an important gap in the engineering simulation software market for CATIA V5" notes Roland Feldhinkel, managing director of NIKA GmbH. “There is already a wide selection of engineering simulation programs available under CATIA V5, covering almost the entire range of Product Lifecycle Management (PLM). But integrated fluid flow and heat transfer software was not among them. As a result, EFD.V5 will be a significant step in the implementation of a fully integrated digital product development environment under CATIA V5.”

EFD.V5 Overview

EFD.V5 is based on the principles of Engineering Fluid Dynamics (EFD). EFD is a radically different approach from Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). While based on the same mathematical foundation as CFD programs, EFD programs speak the language of the engineer. Whereas CFD codes require the user to translate the engineering problem into terms such as y+ value k-e models, EFD.V5 translates the jargon into plain engineering terms such as walls, inlets and outlets. But perhaps the most noteworthy feature of EFD.V5 is its seamless integration into CATIA V5. Due to its tight integration, EFD.V5 uses the original CATIA V5 parts and assemblies without requiring the user to model the flow domain separately. The graphical pre-processor guides the user step-by-step through the physical data definition process using the CATIA model. A fully automatic, multi-adaptive mesh generator based on NIKA’s RAM technology generates high-quality computational grids. The mesh generator and NIKA’s robust convergence control mechanism, ACC, serve as the basis for highly efficient fluid flow simulations.

EFD.V5 offers analysis capabilities such as compressible and incompressible liquids and gases, laminar and turbulent flows, heat transfer and species transport for steady-state and transient flow regimes as well as numerous other sophisticated physical models. A graphical postprocessor is also fully integrated and offers comprehensive results visualization and valuation capabilities with tight connectivity to MS Excel and MS Word using the original CATIA V5 model. EFD.V5 may be used to design and optimize automotive components, electronics cooling, aerospace components, HVAC, hydraulics and pneumatics and biomedical devices.

“NIKA’s EFD technology allows real design cycle integrated flow simulations due to our automation of numerous time-consuming steps in a typical simulation task” adds Dr. Ivo Weinhold, manager CFD products of NIKA. “Using EFD, engineers, and not necessarily analysis specialists, get comprehensive physical insight into virtual prototypes regarding fluid flow, heat transfer and species transport at any moment in the development cycle.”
