DesignSource Technology, Inc.: Life Fitness Selects PDM/Works -R- Software as Standard Design Data Management Solution for SolidWorks -R- Software

Physical Fitness Equipment Manufacturer Drives Engineering Communication Initiatives With Design-Centric PDM

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 5, 2001-- DesignSource Technology, Inc., a SolidWorks Gold Partner and a leading provider of design-centric data management solutions, today announced that Life Fitness has selected PDM/Works software as its standard data management solution for managing product design data created in the SolidWorks mechanical design environment.

Headquartered near Chicago, Life Fitness is the leading manufacturer of a full line of cardiovascular and strength training equipment.

Life Fitness selected PDM/Works after an extensive benchmark of commercially available PDM software, according to Robert Seaman, Senior Project Manager for Engineering at Life Fitness. "PDM/Works has proven to be the obvious choice for boosting productivity and supporting our concurrent product development activities. After selecting, piloting, and implementing 44 seats of PDM/Works, we plan to add more here at headquarters and at our Hammer Strength, ParaBody, and Life Fitness Strength locations. PDM/Works operates and behaves so much like SolidWorks that our engineers picked it up immediately. PDM/Works looks and feels like it was developed by SolidWorks," Seaman says.

"Our goal is to secure and control our product design data to the extent that we can do more concurrently," Seaman explains. "While our designers develop assemblies for our products, manufacturing engineering can use PDM/Works to access designs and develop fixtures and tooling at the same time. We plan to use the PDM/Works Portal (a web-browser-based tool for accessing design information) to tie in our Incoming Quality Control, Purchasing, Technical Publications, and Customer Service departments. PDM/Works elevates our product design communication capabilities, which will help us bring products to market faster."

Jim Foster, President of DesignSource Technology, Inc., says, "The data management challenges that Life Fitness faced are typical of an organization that needs to maximize communication and control of product design information in today's solid modeling design environment. Because PDM/Works is simple to use and implement, companies such as Life Fitness can realize benefits almost immediately and leverage their partnership with us to improve 3D product design communication throughout the manufacturing enterprise."

Unlike traditional PDM software solutions, which are expensive, difficult to implement, and based on a top-down approach to PDM, PDM/Works was developed specifically to provide an affordable solution for supporting the product design process and the engineering workgroup. By managing product design data at its source, PDM/Works provides a solid foundation for extending product design communication. PDM/Works enables SolidWorks users to fully manage the revision control and vaulting of SolidWorks design information as well other file types, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, DWG, PDF, etc. The software also allows engineers to work concurrently across project teams, over LANs, WANs, and the Internet, while maintaining the integrity of product data and minimizing duplicated effort and redundancies across an organization.

InFlow, a subsidiary of Computer-Aided Technology, Inc. (CATI), is the PDM/Works reseller in Chicago working with Life Fitness to provide implementation, training, and support services.
