Metris Announces the LC15, the New Standard for High Resolution 3D Laser Scanning

Leuven, July 18th 2003 - Metris, a leader in inspection and reverse engineering solutions is announcing its newest laser scanner: the LC15. Recently exhibited at the Control Messe 2003 in Germany, this new scanner makes it possible to scan small and detailed objects on your CMM. Due to the smaller field of view, the LC15 guarantees you the accuracy and point density needed for small and detailed parts with tight tolerances. With its cutting edge lightweight and compact design, the LC15 brings Metris’ unrivalled range of integrated solutions for CMM based scanning to a new height.

An eye for detail
In today’s inspection processes there is the ever-increasing demand for inspecting more -and often smaller- objects with higher accuracies. Till now laser scanners are designed for high speed scanning of large objects with a relatively high accuracy. The LC15 however is designed to scan with the highest accuracy without compromising on speed. Outperforming today’s laser scanners accuracy the LC15 is perfectly suited for mobile phones, (small) turbine blades and other precision components.

Key features
The reduced field of view, i.e. 15mm width by 15mm height, combines high accuracy and a point resolution of 25 micrometers with a scanning speed of 20000 points per second.

Like all other Metris scanners, the LC15 scanner is build to work with today’s state of the art measuring device, the CMM. Thanks to the partnering with all important CMM manufacturers, the LC15 is fully integrated on most coordinate measuring machines and controllers. The LC15 is also compatible with the standardized Renishaw PH10M(Q) interface and uses the multiwire concept for error-free, high-speed data transmission.

On the software side, the scanning process is driven by the native Metris Scan software. This software includes automation of the scanning process through macros opening the door to automated workflows. The resulting pointclouds can be further post processed in Metris’ reverse engineering or quality inspection solutions. This functionality is also available for integration in the CMM native scanning applications through dedicated software libraries …

Typical applications
The LC15 is suited for inspection and reverse engineering workflows with a specific need for obtaining the highest accuracy or detail. A few examples are scanning of leading and trailing edge of a jet engine turbine blade or scanning snap features of mobile phones. The non-contact nature of laser scanning makes it also perfectly suitable to measure soft or delicate surfaces such as foam, rubber or clay.

About Metris
Metris provides total solutions for 3D digitizing, 3D inspection and reverse engineering targeting the design and manufacturing community. Primarily focusing on the automotive and aerospace industry, Metris is also active in consumer, medical, entertainment and various other industries.

Metris started as a software company with a new and challenging paradigm for computer aided inspection. Meanwhile Metris moved into the unique position of being the only company providing a total solution including the digitizing hardware and software. The Metris hardware portfolio consists now of optical probes that digitize various sized objects using laser light. The software solutions comprise applications for optimized digitalization, inspection and reverse engineering with a focus on ease of use, accuracy and productivity. These capabilities enable users to optimize their processes resulting into strategic competitive advantages such as shorter lead times, higher quality levels and lower production costs.

Over the last years, hundreds of customers from all over the world have chosen for Metris, broadening and maturing Metris’ solutions portfolio. Metris customers are as well Tier 1, 2 and 3 suppliers as OEM’s such as Airbus, Daimler Chrysler, BMW, VW, GM, Honda, Toyota, Johnson Controls, Lear, Ericsson, Pilkington, Allgon, Sony, Adidas and many more.
