PLM Journal sets parameters for a professional PLM industry

Oxford, England. December 16, 2009
The PLMIG announces the publication of the Q4 Issue of the PLM Journal, which highlights the standards, qualifications and reference models that are needed for the PLM industry.

Almost every other business function or profession (management, project management, quality, engineering, purchasing, supply chain) has its own industry body, its own professional standards, and its own qualifications. The PLM industry should be no exception.

PLM standards lead to more effective working and the possibility of "right first time" implementations. PLM qualifications lead to professional recognition, and an enhanced career path for PLM specialists.

A natural development of standards and metrics is to build them into PLM Reference Models that show what should be achieved through PLM and how much progress any given implementation has made.

None of this can happen unless the PLM industry is prepared to accept the challenge and organise itself in a more collaborative way. The PLM Journal looks at what needs to be done in this area.

The PLM Journal is circulated to PLMIG members four times per year. The Q1 Issue set out a practical method of calculating the Commercial Impact of PLM, and the Q2 issue covered the specific project management methodologies for PLM and PDM. The Q3 issue covered the relationship between PLM and the business, from Vision & Strategy to the practicalities of PLM metrics.

The PLM Interest Group
The PLM Interest Group is a global Group which brings together its members to work proactively to solve their PLM problems. It has previously run workshops that have produced the PLM Benchmarking Handbook; the PLM-SCM Guidebook; and the PLM Maturity Reference Manual; and launched the first vendor-independent User Forum meetings.
