STAR-CCM+ V4.06 Arrives with a BANG!
Bookmark and Share

CD-adapco is pleased to announce the release of STAR-CCM+ V4.06, the third major version of their flagship engineering simulation software released during 2009. In the six years since its first release, STAR-CCM+ has evolved into more than just a CFD code, and is now an integrated platform for powerful multi-disciplinary engineering simulation, including: combustion; multiphase flow; heat transfer through solids and fluids; dynamic fluid body interaction; and solid stress: all from within a single environment. Principal new features of STAR-CCM+ V4.06 include models to simulate broadband aeroacoustic noise and aerodynamic flutter, together with a range of customer requested enhancements aimed at increasing both user productivity and simulation capability.

“Over the course of the past year, STAR-CCM+ has continued to develop at an astonishing rate,” explains VP Product Management Jean-Claude Ercolanelli. “As an organization, we are fully committed to delivering robust and reliable new versions of STAR-CCM+ every four months, featuring the broadest possible set of new capabilities and productivity enhancements. Our global network of dedicated technical support engineers is in constant contact with our software users and one of their key roles is to feed customer requirements back to the product management team. By maintaining this constant dialogue with our users, we have managed to implement over 250 customer requested enhancements during 2009, as well as a range of new features that continue to increase the overall quality of our simulation technology.”

Aeroacoustics and Flutter

Using powerful multi-physics simulation technology, STAR-CCM+ provides engineers with the means to predict the occurrence potentially harmful physical phenomena, providing detailed engineering data that can be used to modify designs in order mitigate their impact.

Building on existing aeroacoustic capability, the latest release of STAR-CCM+ provides new tools that enable engineers to quickly and easily identify the location and strength of flow generated broadband noise sources. In addition to direct methods using LES and DDES, STAR-CCM+ 4.06 introduces broadband aeroacoustic prediction using the Lilley source term as well as four different models: Proudman, Linearized Euler, Goldstein and Curle, ensuring extensive, flexible, coverage of this important application area.

Beyond the prediction of aeroacoustic effects, an extension to the Harmonic Balance capability provides tools for the analysis of blade flutter in rotating machinery, with computational time scales that are drastically reduced compared to traditional transient methodologies.

Powerful new features

Static Mixer SimulationEach new release of STAR-CCM+, provides a range of new pre and post processing capabilities, solver enhancements and the inclusion of additional validated physics models:

  • Generalized Cylinder Meshing. STAR-CCM+ V4.06 introduces a new capability that automatically identifies cylindrical shapes within and geometry and meshes them using entirely prismatic cells. This new feature helps reduce cell count and is suitable for a wide range of applications including long pipelines, nuclear reactor vessels and cyclone separators.
  • Combustion. This new release adds a new thermal NOx model helping engineers comply with increasingly strict emission standards. Also available is an advanced coal combustion capability that includes models for vaporization, devolatilization, and char oxidation.
  • Dynamic Fluid Body Interaction. STAR-CCM+ V4.06 introduces the ability to model rotating regions in its DFBI solver. This allows users to simulate the influence of propellers, rudders, diveplanes and other control surfaces on moving objects.
  • CAE Integration. STAR-CCM+ already allows integration to a wide range of different third party CAE software and version 4.06 extends this to include co-simulation with the 1D virtual engine simulation tool GT-POWER from Gamma Technologies.
