TopSolid'Cam 2009 on its way

We are fast approcahing the end of the year. This means not only holidays in store but also the upcoming release of TopSolid 2009. Here is a quick preview of some of what's in store in TopSolid'Cam 2009 (which will be released in March 2009.)

  • Tolerance management of imported parts – Parts designed using TopSolid'Design or another CAD software are very often modelised to the nominal dimensions. Thanks to its advanced modelor, TopSolid'Design enables a user to transform nominal dimensions to average dimensions. However, what happens when a CAD software other than TopSolid'Design has been used? TopSolid 2009 has taken this into account and allows model dimensions to be easily changed so that the part can be easily machined without having to re-design the complete geometry.
  • Automatic 4 axis roughing cycles - The creation of a new function which enables automatic 4 axis roughing operations on parts such as extrusion screws, impellers, etc. This new function manages such roughing operations while managing collisions, underdrafts, the cutting conditions, etc. In fact the ease of 3 axis roughing is now possible in 4 axis.
  • Drilling automation of cooling circuits for mold makers - This function is particularly useful for mold makers and permits the automatic detection of intersecting cooling circuits. This in turn manages speed modifications of the tool when it enters a zone already drilled in a previous intersecting cooling circuit. This greatly eliminates the risk of breaking the mold plate in an automated fashion.
  • Paraxial roughing on a milling machine - Traditionally such roughing operations are carried out on a turning machine where the shallow pass levels mean that the operation is carried out in several passes. Thanks to TopSolid'Cam 2009 such operations can now be carried out on a milling machine which means that all material is removed in just 1 operation by using a particular helicoidal cycle. This leads to importants time gains.
  • 5 axis machining of composite materials - TopSolid'Cam 2009 now enables tools to make sinusoidal movements which means that tool wear is equal throughout the entire length of the tool. This new function is very important in the cutting of carbon fibre parts, which are notably used in the aerospace industry. Carbon fibre is a highly abrasive material and is machined by milling machines equipped with diamond-tipped or very hard metal tools (which are very expensive). When the length of the tool is longer than the depth of the material to be machined (which is the case in aerospace parts) it is common sense to try to use the rest of the tool. The new sinusoidal movements offered by TopSolid'Cam 2009 prolong thus the lifespan of these tools and thereby generate cost savings.
  • Customized approach and retract movements – This new function allows operators to customize approach and retract contouring movements. The user is not, therefore, obliged to choose from predefined options. He can design and parameter, thanks to TopSolid'Design, the form he wishes for his approach and retract movements and re-use these. Missler Software also added specific approach and retract movements for the wood industry where automation is essential.

TopSolid user wins design award

The French company Procopi has recently been awared with a prestigious award for its design of swimming pools and spas carried out using TopSolid. The jury took into account the work of 80 companies and selected 8 winners. The criteria used to judge the companies included the originality of their work, their efforts to reduce energy waste and increase automation in their activities.

Procopi is a well-known and respected designer & manufacturer of pools and spas. To provide pool and spa installers with exactly the products they need and stay on the cutting edge of technology, the Procopi group, and in particular its R&D department, relies on the TopSolid range of software: TopSolid'Design in the engineering department, TopSolid'Image for documentation, TopSolid'Castor, TopSolid'Cam and TopSolid'Mold for production, and TopSolid'Pdm for technical data and product life cycle management. “For CAD, we chose TopSolid because the program corresponded to our needs and Missler Software was the right size company for us,” explains Pierre Le Guilloux. Further information on this company is available here.

What's New

Missler Software and its German resellers have recently participated in EuroMold, the World Fair for Moldmaking and Tooling, which took place in Frankfurt at the beginning of December. Despite the much talked about economic crisis EuroMold was a very successful show for TopSolid. According to Arnaud de Boisboissel, International Sales Director for Missler Software "The trade fair attracted many visitors and on the TopSolid booth we certainly had many clients and prospective clients. "

EuroMold also marked the unveiling of the new TopSolid corporate stand which will be promoted throughout the world in 2009. Missler Software is currently working on a complete change in its graphical identity which will be launched in the New Year. Further information on the new look for TopSolid will be available in january 2009.

Missler Software also held its annual German press conference during the EuroMold show. This year's conference had a record attendance with 2009 plans and projects being revealed to the press.

Customer of the month: Aalbers Tool and Mold

Established in 1982, Aalbers Tool and Mold supplies high quality injection tooling for the automotive industry. The company can build tools up to 3500 ton press size & equipment able to handle 50 ton mold weights. In 2007 Aalbers Tool and Mold purchased the TopSolid CAD/CAM range of software (12 TopSolid'Design, 12 TopSolid'Mold and 2 TopSolid'Electrode) Since the change-over to TopSolid the company has decreased mold design times by 50%.

TopSolid Tip of the month: TopSolid'Wood

You are a TopSolid operator and you would like some tips on what your software is capable of doing. Each newsletter will include a highlight of the month accompanied by an avi of a TopSolid module.
This month let's take a look at a new tip for TopSolid'Wood.

Video commentary
With the 5 axis machining of some parts, the automatic features proposed are not always the ones we want. Therefore, we need to create a new working coordinate system to get the right tool path and the right tool direction. In the following example, we will show you how to do a reversed sawing on an inclined edge.
