Impressive AMB show

SolidCAM´s booth at the AMB show (see photo) attracted many visitors.

See AMB report...

From September 9 - 13, SolidCAM exhibited at the International AMB trade fair in Stuttgart, Germany. The brand new location at Stuttgart Airport attracted more than 1,300 exhibitors and over 80,000 visitors. The AMB is, after EMO, the most important trade fair for the metal working industry in Central Europe. Together with its distribution partners DPS Software and SolidPro, SolidCAM GmbH demonstrated on overall eight workstations solutions based on the combined solution SolidCAM+SolidWorks for all Manufacturing technologies.

In a keynote speech, Rainer Glatz from the VDMA Frankfurt explained, how Software and Mechanical Engineering come closer together. He identified two trends:

  1. Substitution of 2D by 3D systems
  2. Need to catch up with regard to PDM and PLM
With regard to CAD, it is no longer a simple matter of producing drawings (2D), but the design of 3D CAD models with systems like SolidWorks is used as the base for the digital simulation of product development and product creation processes. Digital technologies, as provided by SolidCAM, enable the virtual simulation of manufacturing processes and thus the reduction of set-up times by up to 90%, or the execution of 5-axis programming with such precision that all subsequent reworking becomes superfluous.

Dear reader, please enjoy our Newsletter. We hope to see you on one of our trade shows in autumn.

  • Longmont Machining succeeds with SolidCAM+SolidWorks
  • Longmont Machining is a 45-employee CNC machine shop located in Longmont, Colorado, that attracts US wide clients in the automotive, medical and consumer electronics industry. In addition to typical "job shop" prototypes, Longmont manufactures also large series of parts up to 50,000 units per month.

Longmont´s state-of-the art equipment and experience in performing advanced processes like dipso technology - magnesium-based injection molding - gives its clients a heavy-duty platform for electronic devices. Sales Engineer Kevin Curtis states: "We were also making a move towards adding design services along with our mold creation and casting services. We started to get pretty fluent in SolidWorks, which was a new challenge for us. We do a fair amount of design now, offering these services along with manufacturing the product, all in a very compressed lead time."

For the CNC programming Longmont replaced their former CAM system with SolidCAM, completely integrated in the SolidWorks modeling environment. "SolidCAM is a lot more intuitive. The integration with SolidWorks meant that our learning curve for the new CAM was very short. Within one or two weeks we were off and running, and doing very complex parts," says Curtis. Today SolidCAM is used for 100 percent of Longmont's operations by its four full time programmers and serving 17 machine tools.
