Minneapolis, Minn.—May, 2008— Fishbowl Solutions, Inc., a software and services firm supplying solutions for PTC’s product development solutions announced that Maintainer Corporation of Iowa has succeeded in automating a tedious engineering task with the help of its DXF Flat Pattern Automation solution. Maintainer Corporation manufactures and markets high quality, value-based products for work trucks. Maintainer had recently implemented a new sheet metal manufacturing software package to speed manufacturing and reduce costs and scrap. Implementation of this new solution, however, required Maintainer to create DXF flat pattern files for every sheet metal part. This was new for Maintainer because their previous NC sheet metal solution was integrated with Pro/ENGINEER® requiring no flat pattern or DXF output creation. Literally over night, DXF flat pattern output became a mandatory task in Maintainer’s process – a task that consumed as much as 7 hours for their larger truck bodies. Manual DXF output was tedious and error-prone, even when partially automated through mapkey routines. Maintainer quickly realized this non-value added activity needed to be addressed. That is when they found Fishbowl Solutions’ DXF Flat Pattern Automation solution. DXF Flat Pattern Automation has allowed Maintainer to automate DXF creation. DXF output for one of their largest truck bodies can be completed in as little as 15 minutes — 28 times faster than the manual method. According to Adam Besaw, Product Designer for Maintainer, “Being an Engineering-to-Order company, we needed to automate this tedious chore so we could focus our time on engineering new designs. This module was the perfect solution.” Since implementing DXF Flat Pattern Automation, Maintainer has been able to focus engineers on more value-added work. DXF Flat Pattern Automation solution automates the creation of 1:1 flat patterns for every Pro|ENGINEER® sheet metal part in an assembly and outputs them as DXF for downstream usage. This saves significant time and reduces errors.
