PALM BAY, Fla. Sept. 28, 2001 VX Corporation, the pioneering developer of advanced, integrated CAD/CAM solutions for engineers and industrial designers, has enhanced the ability of its VX Overdrive CAD/CAM software to directly read, write and heal files created with other systems.
The new functions in VX add powerful interoperability and legacy data management capabilities that meet the complex, "real-world" needs of design and manufacturing professionals who deal with a variety of CAD systems and formats every day.
VX Overdrive extends its powerful interoperability capabilities for operating in today's multi-vendor environments with direct import of Parasolid® -based files as well as Pro/E® and CATIA® files. CAD/CAM systems using the Parasolid kernel include UGS®, Solid Edge® and SolidWorks®, among others.
New VX healing tools flag problems in geometry such as missing tangencies and mismatched surfaces, which can be automatically or manually repaired.
The STEP and IGES interfaces in VX have also been enhanced to identify a larger amount of "smart geometry" created in other CAD systems (such as surfaces resulting from filleting operations). Unlike competing systems that rely on third-party solutions, VX doesnt introduce non-parametrically linked import/export operations.
"Interoperability has become a hot button issue for many CAD users," said Bob Fischer, vice president of sales and marketing at VX. "With so many different systems and all of the legacy data resident in corporations, interoperability is a must. Users are on the receiving end of a mix of non-native data and in turn often have to send files to suppliers and partners. Having a product that easily and effectively handles that mix of file formats gives them a powerful competitive advantage."
Interoperability is more than reading-in STEP geometry or writing an IGES file. Errors and anomalies produced by many modeling kernels can be found in both proprietary model files and can also be passed though standard data exchange formats. It is not unusual for CAD files to travel between several different companies from initial concept through engineering design, specification, mold design, and manufacturing. As a result, even more errors and anomalies can appear as CAD geometry is translated from one CAD format to another.
Consequently, effective interoperability requires intelligent examination of the non-native file to identify and heal problem CAD geometry.
In VX software, this repair function is typically handled by a proprietary technology known as Proximity Compliant Tolerancing. Built into the VX modeling kernel, this technology recognizes geometric errors as they are encountered during modeling operations. The small gaps and vertices that should not exist are automatically repaired. Other modeling kernels rely on fixed, relative or adaptive tolerancing schemes that require additional user involvement and can result in loss of accuracy throughout the model.
With the new VX healing functionality, a user has the choice of automatically healing an imported file or stepping through a case by case examination of each trouble spot, identified by color. While earlier forms of automatic healing have been available in some CAD packages, VX is the first mid-priced system to offer robust healing that includes easy manual inspection and repair.
