Materialise and Stratasys Team Up

LEUVEN, Belgium & MINNEAPOLIS—(BUSINESS WIRE)—June 14, 2007— Stakeholders invested in fused deposition modeling (FDM(TM)) technology for prototyping and direct digital manufacturing are about to gain a significant advantage over their competition. That's because Materialise, which sets the industry standard for development of RP&M software, and Stratasys (Nasdaq: SSYS), the global leader in prototyping and direct digital manufacturing systems, today finalized a worldwide distribution agreement whereby Stratasys will offer Materialise' Magics RP software with its FDM(TM) systems. The formal joint announcement was issued by Stratasys CEO Scott Crump and Wilfried Vancraen, CEO of Materialise.

"We're proud to team up again with Stratasys, a company renowned worldwide as a technical innovator," said Vancraen, noting that this is the second partnership agreement the two companies have signed this year. The first, which was announced in February, centered on the development of a specialized version of Magics for Dimension. Dimension is a Stratasys business unit that manufactures 3D printers.

Both Materialise and Stratasys consider their collaboration on Magics for FDM(TM) a further indicator of how strongly they're aligned. "Magics' integrated tools will play a key role in Stratasys' goal of providing a total solution for users of their FDM(TM) systems," Vancraen said. "Users can expect to see exceptional part quality, high throughput and increased ability to build large parts."

Magics RP is a full range of user-friendly software products that streamline, automate and provide more power to every step in the RP&M process: cutting parts to fit on the build platform; hollowing models to save material and build time; Z compensation; labeling; and three-dimensional geometry nesting to minimize build height and time. A major element of Magics' success within the RP&M industry has been its capability both for importing a wide range of CAD files and for exporting files ready for rapid prototyping, tooling and manufacturing. It also allows the user to repair and optimize 3D models, analyze parts and perform process-related design changes on STL files.

"This agreement demonstrates our commitment to delivering cutting-edge prototyping and manufacturing solutions to our customers," said Scott Crump. "And expanding our products and services with Magics RP will help them substantially improve their bottom line and enhance their competitive position." He added that the companies are in the exploration stage of negotiating distribution agreements for additional Materialise products. Chief among these are 3-matic, a forward-engineering application, and Mimics, which translates CT or MRI data into complete 3D models. Separate agreements would define the terms of those partnerships.

Headquartered in Belgium, Materialise entered the RP field in 1990 as a provider of software solutions and services for rapid prototyping. It now consists of branch offices all over the world, and has experienced exponential growth in its customer base and range of products. Its software division develops advanced, innovative solutions for RP, tooling and rapid manufacturing. Its client list consists of leading firms in the automotive, aerospace and consumer electronics industries.
