First-time usage of Nylon 11 in the EOS P700 SLS machine

May 10, 2007, Carlsbad, Calif.-Directed Manufacturing Inc., the sister company to Forecast Product Development and the leader in prototype and production SLS and DMLS (Direct Metal Laser Sintering) services, became the first company in the world to successfully build Nylon 11 in the EOS P700 machine.

"After several attempts and many kilos of powder, we finally did it," said Tory Sirkin, VP of sales for Directed Manufacturing Inc.  "We at DMI and our customer could not have been happier with the results."

The build, which consisted of two large parts stacked on top of each other, nearly filled up the build chamber on the SLS machine, and helped to expand the usability of production, laser-sintered nylon.

Customers who want large parts in one piece and in Nylon 11, now have an option," said Tory Sirkin.  "They do not have to resort to multiple piece SLS builds in that material any longer."

DMI has built many parts in a variety of nylons on the EOS P700, which has a build chamber of 29" x 16" x 23", including a variety of glass filled and nylon 12 materials.

Tensile bars were built with the parts, and tests showed that everything performed exceptionally well, including the area at the knit line where the two lasers meet.  Visually, there was no seam at the knit line.

Wall thickness on the part ranged from .038" up to .068".  At its longest axis, the part was 24" and included a feature with threads on it.

Directed Manufacturing Inc., a sister company to 11-year-old Forecast Product Development, uses both EOS and 3D Systems SLS nylon-sintering machines.

In January, DMI became the first supplier on the West Coast to acquire an EOS M270 DMLS machine, which builds pure 17-4 stainless steel or Cobalt Chrome MP1 parts at a 20-micron layer thickness.

Directed Manufacturing Inc. offers production sintered SLS and DMLS (Direct Metal Laser Sintering) services.  Forecast Product Development offers SLA, SLS, DMLS, RTV and Hybrid castings, CNC, and Injection Molding services.
