OPEN MIND Has Success with F1 Team

CAD/CAM specialist Open Mind Technologies is proud to announce that it has signed a deal to deliver 20 seats of its extremely popular hyperMILL CAD/CAM package to a world renowned Formula 1 Racing Team. Not to be mentioned for legal reasons, the deal with the racing team had been the final step of a feasibility study that has been ongoing for two months.

The F1 team spent two days benchmarking all of the UK’s leading CAM systems providers. From this, two systems justified a one month trial period to identify the most suitable package. Following the one month trial with a leading competitor and another month working with the hyperMILL from Open Mind, the choice was easily made.

With such a considerable investment, the F1 Team wanted to be 100% certain it chose the ideal package – and in hyperMILL the company found everything it needs!!

Previously operating three different CAM systems, the F1 team wanted to standardise its procedures and operate one system that offered 2-axis, 2½ -axis/prismatic, 3-axis, 4-axis, 5-axis and Mill/Turn CAD/CAM cycles. hyperMILL was the only system that could offer best-in class in all these areas.
Richard Nolan, Sales & Marketing Director at Open Mind Technologies UK Ltd comments: “Working with this world renowned racing team is justification that hyperMILL is an industry leading CAM solution for 2, 3, 4 and 5-axis cycles. hyperMILL advanced collision avoidance technology gives customers a new level of confidence not just in 5-axis, but also 2, 3 and 4-axis.

“The F1 business is continually becoming more and more complex and the existing system at this facility was running out of steam. hyperMILL will now be used for all parts of the F1 engines including CAM Shafts, pistons, and ports.

The customer felt vulnerable with the existing setup and needed to make a significant step ahead of their competitors, which is the strategy of F1 racing teams. In a highly competitive sport where fractions of a second can make all the difference, the end user is always looking at ways to improve competitiveness and hyperMILL will undoubtedly support this philosophy.”

“It was very encouraging to Open Mind to see a major UK manufacturer take an objective look at their workflow and then select a CAM system that best matched this workflow. All too often UK companies do not take the time to fully investigate a system that will have a significant impact on their future competitiveness,” continues Mr Nolan.

The feasibility study conducted by the F1 team was very extensive and it measured the CAM packages on ten critical criteria. Of the ten criteria that includes computation times, ease of use, intuitive, support, large model capability, model conversation and verification and simulation, Open Mind was a clear leader. The packages were also measured on prismatic, surface and 5-axis machining functionality and this is where the exceptional capabilities of hyperMILL excelled. The F1 team marked the numerous systems on a score sheet based on the 10 criteria. Out of a maximum of 40 points, hyperMILL scored 34 – a long way ahead of its closest competitors with 25 and 24 points respectively.

As part of the support element, the F1 team was impressed with the one major update and 3 minor updates per year. “The customer was delighted with our future development plans and agreed that Open Mind were taking major steps in the right direction. We will be conducting regular dialogue on how to improve the product still further, not just to the good of this particular company, but to the good of the product and everyone using it,” concludes Mr Nolan.

There are now more World Class engineers in F1 than just about any other industry, most of which are located in the UK. These engineers are in F1 for the competitive and financial rewards as well as the kudos of being involved in such a prestigious sport. F1 always has and will continue to invest heavily in technology that gives teams an edge – and this is another factor that justifies the vast capabilities of Open Mind’s hyperMILL.

With the Aerospace, Medical, Mould and Die and Composite sectors all having a significant presence in the UK manufacturing industry, hyperMILL is destined to gather momentum as a market leading system that will increase the profitability and longevity of its customers in the market place
