New Jersey FIRST Robotics Competition Kicks Off

Dozens of High School Teams Set Out to Produce the Best Robot

NEWARK, N.J., Jan. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- The 2007 New Jersey FIRST Robotics Competition, sponsored by Johnson & Johnson, began this past weekend as registered participants from more than 58 high schools around the region received a do-it-yourself kit jam-packed with all the gizmos and gadgets needed to build a robot, but no directions on how to do so.

For the next six weeks, hundreds of students will work closely with dozens of professional engineering mentors to design and assemble sophisticated, remote-controlled robots that will compete in a high-powered game of skill and strategy March 1-3 at Trenton's Sovereign Bank Arena. The competition will be one of 37 regional competitions leading up to the National Finals in Atlanta on April 12-14.

New Jersey FIRST (FIRST is For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is the local arm of the well-known national program begun by inventor Dean Kamen more than ten years ago. FIRST is widely praised for immersing students in the world of engineering to help prepare them for technology careers in the global economy. FIRST provides students with a unique chance to work together as a team to brainstorm ideas, design devices and put them to the test in fun-filled, high-energy contests. Teams are judged not only on who wins, but on design, team spirit, professionalism and their ability to overcome obstacles.

New York City/New Jersey FIRST! is based at New Jersey Institute of Technology. For more information on the program, call Randy Schaeffer, regional director, (973) 596-3234.
