November 16, 2006 -- The City of McKinney will celebrate GIS (Geographic Information System) Day on Nov. 15 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Old Settler’s Recreation Center, 1201 East Louisiana.
GIS Day is an international event where GIS users meet with students, business professionals and the public to showcase real-world applications of this important technology.
The city’s GIS department is hosting a local event to celebrate this day, focusing on educating the community about the importance of learning and caring about geography. Participants will be able to test out the latest Global Positioning Systems, locate landmarks in the map gallery and take a virtual tour of the GIS web site. The McKinney Fire Department will present skits and discuss how they use GIS during emergencies. The McKinney Police Department will be handing out ID kits and will explain how GIS helps them locate lost individuals. Snacks and door prizes will also be available throughout the day.
