FEA-Opt Technology Helps INER Reduce Cost and Weight of a Heavy Duty York with the SmartDO Technology

FEA-Opt Technology ( www.FEA-Optimization.com), one of the world-leading CAE consultancy and design optimization specialist firms based in Taiwan, announces they have successfully helped the Institute of Nuclear Energy Research (INER) in Taiwan reduce the cost and weight of a heavy duty york with its SmartDO Technology.

The heavy duty york at attention was used to lift some very sensitive material container. The original weight of the york was about 700 kg, and was well over the allowable range. Weight, safety and cost are all important issues. "When INER came to us, they didn't believe the weight could be reduced any further." said Dr. Shen-Yeh Chen, the President and the inventor of the SmartDO system at FEA-Opt Technology. "The york was designed and reviewed by very experienced designers in the institute, and they have tried almost all the packages they have to optimize the design. Also because there are so many design limitations, the design space is highly constrained." According to Dr. S-Y. Chen, with the already available parametric model from INER, the optimization model was set up in one hour for SmartDO, and the design optimization only took about few hours. "The result is obvious and significant", said Dr. Chen, "The total weight was reduced for more than 20%, and the stress from the Finite Element Analysis result was slightly reduced."

One staff from INER, who doesn't want to be named, says "For all the other packages we have tried, the most we could get was about 1% reduction in weight. By inspecting those results, the design changes were more likely to be truncate errors instead of meaningful optimization." According to Dr. Chen, this problem is the typical one with numerical noise and local minimum, therefore all other packages INER tried failed to produce meaningful improvement.
